I actually agree with your comment. Especially the part where you said "older holders". New holders are not the same.

Maybe it's my eye's but is there something going on with the 2? It looks odd, my vote would be a 64.

The "new" ANACS seems to over grade by a point or so. Not to mention the new holders are fugly. The old white holders looked much nicer.

Some data on the 1927 P Dollar:

Gray Sheet ask is $57 in 60, $165 in 63, $480 in 64, and $3,175 in 65. I showed this coin to my friend that specializes in silver dollar collecting. My friend told me that even though the 27-P has a low mintage of 848,000, that uncirculated original rolls were kept making the pieces available today. He also claims that the Philadelphia coins are better struck than the S & D branch mint coins. This has made the 1927 a popular coin in many collections. I checked the PCGS population report & it breaks down the population as follows:
    MS60 - 1%
    MS61 - 4%
    MS62 - 20%
    MS63 - 40%
    MS64 - 30%
    MS65 - 5%
    MS66 - 0.1%

I’ll put the slab photo on Photobucket & post the grade now.

This is a good example of “buy the coin not the holder”. My opinion with the coin in-hand is MS 63.5 Therefore, I agree with anyone that stated MS 63 or MS 64. The tick on the chin takes it out of MS 65 IMO. I think this is an example where ANACS may have been a little hard on the coin.

The guy that sold me the coin didn’t appreciate the original toning. I agree with Numismatist47 opinion of “MS 64, nothing under MS63”.

I like that coin but yea on these bigger pictures I can see that my 65 was too high. I agree with your 63/64. The chin hit just brings your eye there but nice other then that spot.
    Good pick up.

I have to admit, it was just a guess. I am very new to the collecting business and don't have much information. It was just a guess. But thankyou!!!

    Hello 50 Cent,

If you were to take a mint bag of 1,000 Morgan or Peace silver dollars & divide them into 11 piles of grades MS60 to MS70, then you would probably find that they were distributed something like the PCGS population report for this 1927-P:

    MS60 - 1%
    MS61 - 4%

    MS62 - 20%
    MS63 - 40%
    MS64 - 30%
    MS65 - 5%
    MS66 - 0.1%

(Of course each year & each bag from the mint would be different but this is just being used as an example). There would be mostly MS63 coins and you might need to go through several bags of 1,000 to find a MS66 or an MS67.

I think I read the coin right (64). It was ANACS I misread. I thought they would bump it up, not knock it down. I wonder what they saw/did not see that we are missing.

I was thinking the same thing, what are we missing. I have to believe at this point that it is related to luster. Perhaps the coin was dipped and the toning is secondary toning.

    What are we missing...

I too have been looking for something missed. I can’t find any hairlines or dip-burn. My guess is that “they” gave it a 63 and then knocked it down a point for the hit on the chin. “They” didn’t study the coin to the extent that I have been able. I really wasn’t planning to re-submit the coin but perhaps it should be included with my next raw coin submission. Whenever that happens, I'll post it.
