There was never really a "collector's edition" minted for 1976, other than mint sets---but there were 5 different coins minted for the bicentennial year---a "P" (no mintmark on obverse), "D", "S" silver, "S" clad proof and an "S" silver proof. Of course, the most collectable ones are all of the "S" issues. You can tell the difference by looking at the edge for the copper on the clads. There would also be a weight difference if you have a gram scale---let me know and I can look up the weights if you want them---

Thanks for the info. Can you show me the differance on a picture of the edge of a silver clad and a non-silver clad.
    thanks

I don't have any edge-on photos of a clad vs. silver edge---but, if you'll just take a look at your pocket change, you can see a clad edge on post 1964 (which are clad) quarters and dimes. They will have dark bands seperating the "sandwiched" nickel surfaces from the darker copper layer in between. On a silver coin, there will be no "sandwich"---it will be solid silver from edge to edge. Hope this helps----

I ordered a box of nickels and pennies from wachovia today, couldn't get them today, because they can only go into the vault in the mornings or something so I'm going tomorrow. I asked my smaller bank to order a box of halves for me, they said they would see if they could, and would call me, but I haven't heard from them. So that either means that they can't or that they can and they'll call me when they get a box?

    Speaking of proofs

Wow, could it be the power of suggestion? LOL While I was typing the post about what proofs I needed, I got a phone call from one of my bankers. He had found some rolls for me. I finished the post and then my son and I headed out to get them. In the meanwhile, you posted this about really finding proofs. Before this trip, the most I had ever found was 2 proofs on the same day. He had $120 in halves CWR for me. Here is what they contained:

    1952
    1954
    1964 x 4 (2 look like just out of a roll)
    40%'ers x 13
1 foreign coin which I have never seen and can't read lol

    and AMAZINGLY FOR ME...

1 1969S great shape but dirty
    1990S
    1996S
    1997S
    2000S
    2001S
    2002S
    2005S
All 7 of these must have just come out of the plastic as there are in the best shape I have ever found. So after talking about it I found 8 proofs and 2 of them happened to be ones I needed. If my wife gets home soon with the camera I will post a pic for you.

Thats just great. You've had some great luck over the last year it looks like and it's continuing.

I searched another 2 boxes today

    Box 1 - 1 40%
    Box 2 - 2 40%

Thats 4 boxes this week and only 5-40%s.

I did notice one interesting thing today. The boxes are coming from Dunbar and today they were stamped on the bottom. The stamp said "CWI #23 - May 28, 2010 - Inspected by #XXX2"

Has anyone ever seen this before? Not the greatest that these boxes are all brand new which might explain why lately I've seen nothing. I'm going to start splitting the boxes I get between 2 Dunbar banks about 30 miles apart

I did a box of nickels and cents today. Didn't find anything in the nickels, I just sorted by date really, everything was either right before or right after the silver...thinking about saving all of them pre 1980, and maybe a few from the 1980's.

I found approximately 15 wheaties in the cents, and one was from the 20's. Also found a small handful of shield, log cabing, log, and Illinois 2009's one or two might have been a D. Still need to look for errors. Also got some Canadian cents, one from the Bahamas, a nickel from Bermuda, 20 Pence, and a Canadian Nickel. Kind of disappointed with the nickels, but I completed BOTH of my 1962-1994 albums!!...I still want to get my hands on a box of halves...the bank I've been going to for at least 15 years(almost all my life) doesn't seem to interested in ordering a box for me...so I think I'll ask Wachovia...

Anything to keep an eye out for when I check the nickels again?

If any of the 1982 or 1983 P&D's are uncirculated or almost uncirculated, they are worth about $1.50-$2.00 each according to the latest edition RedBook---

You'll have dry boxes---but, then you may hit one with MANY silvers---searching is hit and miss for sure. Sometimes it does get pretty discouraging when you open roll after roll of clads---

I used the penny arcade at TD bank this evening and filled the bag with my nickel and cent dump...when the guy opened it up I saw some halves sitting in there...I regret not asking him if I could buy them off him...It was late and they were closing soon, plus I felt like he wouldn't be allowed to or something...next time.

I ordered a box of halves from Wachovia and when I picked them up, the box had been opened and then taped back up. Sure enough, every roll had been opened then rerolled (they even looked like machine rolls) and put back in the box. What a bummer.

    Lincoln roll find

I got 55 dollars in rolls days ago, and today out jumps a clean 1995 DDO. Cartwheel double. Never ceases to amaze me that clean clads are left unsearched by folks, so I search on. Just a note on the DDR Hot Springs quarters. Some are going to two different attributers.:smile. I also have another interesting LP3 that I call a smokestack Lincoln. Will share all soon. With BETTER pics, I hope.

my grandma came over with a huge thing filled with halves, ikes, and sba's. also a bunch of other change. there was 4 rolls of pennies. i noticed the rolls looked old, but not as old as i thought. the newest coins were 1978's. wherever she kept them, they toned so nice! a lot of them were beautiful rainbow toned. i took a few of the nicer ones out and am leaving the rest in the rolls for years to come.

now all the ikes are non silver. some bicentennial ones, overall there was $76 in ikes. i will probably just keep them. all the sba's were 1979 and 1980 P$D's. there is around 22 of them and will keep them as well.

onto the jfk halves.. there was 120 of them and only two silvers('67&'68). the rest were late 70's and early '80's, with about 20 bicentennials. there is a '71 that is real nice, i know its not a proof, but looks close.

before i spend them, is there anything i should be looking for? i know to look for ones missing the "FG". is there any certain years? i have a few that look like they are missing it, but it may be weak strike..

i found a 1993 Jamaican dollar coin, i know its not rare, but its a pretty cool coin. i also found something really weird and will be making a thread about it later tonight. i also will post pictures of some of todays finds.

i had fun today and also got a '47 and '53-D jefferson nickel i needed for my circulation set!
