All of the "S" mintmarks in the Kennedy series will be proofs. There are some that contain silver, such as the 1976-S (which also had a clad proof) and from 1992 to present the mint has issued silver (as well as clad) proofs.

The one you have is a clad proof. The bad news is that once a proof leaves its mint set and goes into circulation, the value goes way down because it shows signs of, well, circulation. Proofs were never meant to be circulated, so what you have is a low mintage "keeper", it's not going to be worth more than maybe $1.00, tops. Even ones that are uncirculated can be bought for 2 or 3 dollars.

Hope this helps, congrats on the find, and beware of the searching bug!

By the way, while you're searching, be on the lookout for 1987 P&D's and 2002-Present P&D's. These dates were not issued for circulation, but they turn up quite a bit. I have dozens of them found from roll seaching (except for the 1987---haven't found one of those yet)----and, like Train said, the 1970-S wasn't issued for circulation either, and it has silver in it (haven't found one of those either)----

Nice, thats kind of what I thought, I was wondering why it looked so much nicer than all of the others. Time to wrap them up take them to another bank and find some more.

I ordered $2k worth on Friday and they didn't arrive today, so I've got nothing to do today. Maybe get tires for my car...

Yes, the reason it looks so much nicer is that proofs are struck with special polished dies that gives the coin a mirror-like finish in the fields---and some of the devices will have a matte, cameo appearance.

LOL, having searcher's withdrawal? I know the feeling. Do what I do and search a box of pennies :)

Pennies are cool to search... better than that box of dimes I did last week.

Drove around to a bunch of banks and picked up ~$40 in halves with nothing. Gonna put 'em back into circulation... already started at Quizno's for lunch...

I agree---pennies are fun---but filthy! I hoard away the pre-1982 mintages, sort out the wheaties and hoard those seperately, and search them all for tons of different varieties and errors---of which I have found MANY. Some examples:

    2009 DDR Double Thumb
    1994 DDR Double Column (2)
    1970-S Small Date
    1995-D DDO

Just to name a few. This is a great resource for what to look for: http://www.lincolncentresource.com/index.html

I usually have around 20-25% pre-1982's, about 5-10 wheaties, and at least one of some sort of strange unknown error per box.

The CAM's and WAM's have eluded me thus far---but they are very rare and I doubt one will ever turn up. The earliest date I've come across (though maybe 25 boxes) is a 1920-P.

By the way, a 1/2 gallon plastic milk jug holds almost exactly 2000 pennies and weighs right at 22 lbs (making the jug worth about $40 melt), this is how I hoard the pre-82's.

How rare are the WAMs? I found a 1999 (i think but I guess it could have been 1998) but the obverse looked like someone had gouged it with a nail. I threw it back in the big bag of coins and have not turned them back in yet. I just figured with the obverse looking like it did, the coin would only be worth 1c. Should I find it again?

Picked up my 2 boxes from last week and went through them.

    Box 1 - nothing
    Box 2 - 2-40%s

When I was ordering 1 box per week, the boxes were in rough shape and I was getting silver. Ever since I moved to 2 boxes per week, the boxes are in great shape, filled with marked coins and have been producing less and less each week....hopefully it's just coincidence

Wow, if it was a 1999, that is the RAREST of the WAMs---worth at least $50 even damaged. AU examples are selling for $250+ and MS examples are $500+---as high as $1,000 for MS-65's.

I think I'd go find that bag!!!

Ok, about to finish my year of roll searching so I decided to buy my first 2 dansco's to display some of them in. I bought an used 1941-1947 (2 page) liberty half album in good shape and they threw in a loose Franklin half page that was sitting on the shelf beside it. Paid $8 for the book and 3 pages. Since I only have a little over 40 of each this will do to put my "nicer" ones in that we pulled from circulation. Then I bought a new Dansco for the Kennedy's. It is from 1964 -2012 with all the proof and silver half slots (modern) with a total of 8 pages. Paid $22.95 for it.

Really nice albums to be able to view the coins in.

Did some more bank hopping today and picked up another $3.50 in halves and $24 in Ikes, nothing too great though. It's kind of nice having a lot of banks in short driving distance...

    Hi Erin,

If you manage to fill that Kennedy album from roll searching, you'll have less than $100 invested for what everybody else is paying close to a $1,000 for a complete collection. Of course, your proofs will be circulated, but still an amazing accomplishment!

I know it's nothing incredibly special, but I finally found a 1973-S penny to complete my Lincoln Memorial folder.

Sure it's special. Not many people can pull coins from circulation to fill a complete album.

    Congrats!

Searched two boxes of halves this weekend:

    Box 1: 4 40%
    Box 2: 3 40%

Also picked up $120 in CWR, got an '87 but no silver.

All in all, not bad, but nothing to write home about... so thought I'd post it here instead :goofer:

Got 2 more boxes coming tomorrow!

Yeah, I will put it together when I get back from the Astros game with my kids tonight. I have most of the circulated "proofs" so it should be close to full. Of course I have only pulled the 1976S silver so I wont have the post 1992 silver proofs but I wll have the rest all at face value. Fun for me and the kids for certain.

That's great. A truly dedicated searcher you are, for sure!

You may have to buy the 1992+ proofs to complete the album---I've never seen one in circulation---

Do you know about the IKE varieties ?
Do you have a RedBook yet , if not you should get one.
If you don't have the Cherrypickers guides volume 1 & 2 yet , I strongly suggest you get them. You might be surprised at how many varieties there are to look for.
