I guess it is worth $5 if you accepted it as a $5 bet. Personally, I would value it closer to $0.05 because the gold plating (which probably has a couple of cents worth of gold) destroyed any numismatic value the coin had.

That is a thought. I had not considered that "gold" could harm the value of a nickel. This a good example where gold might be less.

    Sunflower,

That nickel is now a novelty suitable for sale at a flea market to the unsuspecting public who think gold plating a coin makes it more collectible. Knowlegeable collectors would not place a high numismatic value on a piece like this. (There is a current thread about cleaning coins and how original surfaces are preferred. Gold plating is NOT an original surface.)

How can you tell if a coin is gold plated or gold toned?

The look. You just get used to knowing. Like how can you tell if it's a Ford or a Chevy? But you can!!

Coins that have been gold plated carry no value for the gold plating.

    You have a F - VF 1936 Buffalo nickel, worth about $1.

The fact that the US Mint did not make Buffalo nickels out of gold. They used nickel.
