I recently bought this 1917 S Ty II Standing Liberty Quarter off EBay.

I bought it for the excellent toning. I paid $120.00 plus 4.95 shipping.

The seller had it graded as EF40. I thought it was closer to EF45 myself, now that I have it in hand, I'm thinking it might be AU 50 or better. Look at the detail in the design on the shield. The Redbook price jumps from $145 to $180 betw EF 40 and AU 50.

What are your opinions on the grade of this coin?

Can I see the reverse. I'm not sure why the head is more worn than the rest of the sensitive spots on the coin.

BTW - that coin is no where near AU

The shield and it's rivets are nice. But that head is lame-o...lol
Nice coin for the date though.
    I'll go with XF-45
Smoked ;) You didn't smoke it did you?
    Congrates on the pick up.

Here's the reverse, I suppose it can't be AU by definition. Since the Official ANA Grading Standards Guide states: "At least 50% of mint luster must still be present."

But I think it still has AU details. As you can see the lines in the eagle's tail feathers.

    I'd say EF-45. Nice reverse.

I know you were...given my experimentation with re-toning coins, I thought it was funny! :smile

    XF40 at best.

I don't know. The breast feathers are still vissible on the eagle, and while I don't hat the ANA grading book in front of me, that seems to make is XF45.

the head itself was probably very weak from the strike (S mint)

Coin looks like an XF 40 .

You paid to much for this coin .

You can pick these up slabbed in XF 40 for $ 80.

For $ 120 you could have picked up a slabbed Au 50 .

Please post a link to a site where I can buy a slabbed 1917 S Type II SLQ in XF40, for $80.

Heck, it took the better part of two months to even find one this grade on EBay

    Heritage Auctions .

Wholesale on this coin in XF 40 is $ 80. Retail is $ 100.
Do not use Red Book as a price guide.
Numismedia retail is a better gauge for retail price.
The best price guide you can use is the Heritage Auction price database.

Not since 2005 - and that one was ANACS. The last 2 they sold both went over $125 (ICG and ANACS).

Found one on Heritage; slabbed by ICG sold for $126.50 in XF 45. So I'm pretty much in the ballpark price-wise. The one in the ICG slab sure looks like it's been dipped though.

ICG has been not the best grading slabs.

Heritage lists current wholesale and retails prices .
Current listed wholesale is between $76 and $ 84 dollars.
Numismedia retail is $ 97 . Coin prices have dropped over the last 2 years. Using a price realized 5 years ago as a comparison is meaningless.
$ 120 Raw is to much to pay for this coin . Finding one slabbed is difficult because there are so few at that low grade level .

Note - the price guides are for original coins . The coin sold here was an Details coins in an ICG Holder.

The most recent one you show in that table is still over 2 years old. Prices have changed since then.

Well I can tell you for sure that prices have not gone up .
That table is up to date .
