Hot Springs Doubled Dies!

I have scads of MDD pennies, some nickels, lots of dimes and such. What set this one apart was that it was cantilevered, and the travel of the doubling extends to the A preceding it. Another of the series is doubled in arka"NSAS" all the way. One of the challenges in attributing incuse is that any slop or chatter in the strike is going to show as MDD. So I am careful not to call that a doubled die. However, some of these strikes also have an effect which makes the letters look like block letters. This could well be a function of the same dynamics which cause those pesky metal flow lines at the edges and sometimes toward the center of the coin. Chris- the box dates with the inspector stamp #, and time, are a point of reference for finding similar errors. With the LP2 ddr you could almost tell which errors might come out of a certain box given that information. Certainity? No. Very helpful? Yes. For sure with the LP2 box info, it told you which boxes probably had zero errors, and thus not to buy those dates on the secondary market.

 

When the contractor's employees fill those boxes, they have no idea whether there are errors or not, and quite frankly, if the employees of the shipping company spent their time making sure that errors were in certain boxes (or not), the company would probably lose the contract with the Mint for not shipping on a timely basis. Besides that, the Mint ships the coins by the truckload. How can anyone tell which production run from which dies is where?

This mistaken belief comes up all the time, and a perfect example was when the Wisconsin High Leaf and Low Leaf quarters came out. Ebay sellers were conning people into believing boxes with certain dates contained the varieties, but they didn't.

Without better photos, I would judge it MD. The "S" doesn't appear to be rotated or tilted in any way. The flattened western area of it appears to be consistent with MD. I am not sure where your "incluse" falls into your explanation.

I really think you would be happier to send it to Potter or someone to verify your suspicions, as I feel you are so set on your answer ( and I understand , as you have it in hand), that you might not get the positive response you would like. No hard feeling intended, as we are all just opinion as it stands. Good Luck.

Obviously you don't read other forums (ie the biggest TPG). I personally have bought large quantities of unopened LP2 boxes, and found the box date recommendations, from other members, to be extremely accurate.

You need to reread my post, I stated specifically LP2 errors, nothing else!

Not every member of the PCGS forums is a Kool-Aid drinker, but I must admit that a lot are. The dealers and posters are pretty reliable, and I would take their word for a lot of things, not concerning TPG's.

Now to the white box ordeal. The LP2's are a very good example of what the date of the box means. The date of the box on my LP2's didn't match up with those of the errors, so I sold those puppies, I sold them good, and broke even. (I was hoping they would be like the LP1)
Other people got lucky, and got the dates with the errors inside, and they sold them.
Do I think every single box had those errors in it? Nope. Do I think many of them did? HECK YEAH! And it was proven by the many people who got the boxes, opened the rolls, and sold the error, or sold the boxes with the date showing as a unsearched error roll, basically.

In response to this thread, my first impression was, oh great, another mess up by the mint. Remember all the errors last year!? I just get sick of hearing about errors to be honest, although error collectors must love it.
I'm not familiar with the characteristics of MD or DD, but I will say that Larry's photos show it a lot better!
