I just joined this site and posted a similar question in my introduction but the picture quality was bad (taken with cell phone) Now I have a better picture and was wondering if you guys could help me out. What is this band around the coin and how does it effect the value?

It looks to me like a bezel... maybe from a belt buckle or a piece of jewelry.

Put a magnet to it......I bet it sticks!

Consider this.....shouldn't the band be the same thickness on the reverse as the obverse. Why does the band appear 3 times a thick on the reverse as the obverse. Are the coin faces even the same size on both sides of the coin?

I've seen money clips with things like that around them. And SilverSurfer, if it was in something like a money clip or possibly even a belt buckle, it may have had a larger back to it to help keep it in its spot.
    Thanks,
    Tyler

Money clip makes sense. Only the obverse side of the ring has decoration.

That was used for exonumia, coins used for jewelry or other such items like beltbuckels, bottle openers, money clips, etc. It effects the value quite a lot as usually the coin has to be altered in order to be fitted the jewlery or something. Looks like yours was used for a money clip.

Quite surely an amulet. You can see where the "eye" was attached.:)

Some coins or coin dealers sell what is called "coin jewlery" like to hang it on a key chain or for deocritive purposes could be a bezel or a ring, looks worn down to me, in my opinion "coin jewlery" is a waste.

coin jewelry makes sense, what do you recommend that I do with it? Try to sell it as is or try to remove the band?

Keep it as an heirloom. Any attempt at trying to remove this coin from its captivity will further damage it........
