So i put just the three that i consider the big 3 or most talked of. Do you prefer ANACS, NGC, or PCGS. Things to consider: - ease of use - grading - acurracy - slab condition - return coin condition - shipping time - general cost
In my opinion it has been quite some time since ANACS could be lumped together with NGC and PCGS. Truly, there are only two major players in the US certified coin field and these are NGC and PCGS. ANACS fell by the wayside many years ago and is viewed along with ICG, SEGS and PCI for much of the market.
i havent personally sent coins to be graded yet but perfer to buy ngc graded coins, i do have some graded by pcgs as well.
Tom, Thanks for clearing that up i have been hearing alot of speculation about ANACS lately so im glad you told me what was actually going on thanks again.
I didn't vote. And here's why. I prefer PCGS and also like NGC. Those two are what I look for when buying slabbed coins. But in the category of ease of use ANACS has a rep, Paul Joseph with a table at local shows. It's just too easy to pass up. You bring your raw coins to the show and submit them to Paul. He puts them in 2.5 X 2.5 flips and ships to ANACS for free. You just pay for the grading and return shipping. There are no add on fees and no required "clubs" to join. And there are show specials which save a lot of money. I can not say enough how simple this is. Now if I had a big money coin maybe I would put up with the cost and hassles of PCGS and NGC.
I can provide you with instant satisfaction to your question, no waiting. Please read this thread with poll. NGC vs PCGS The thread is only 1 year old.
Companies can change over the years some people who used to like anacs now prefer ngc over them. Companies satisfaction can change over a year.
I used to like ANACS, in my beginning days of collecting. You learn to buy coins in NGC/PCGS holders to learn how to grade. There is no problem with buying ANACS coins if you can say that you are buying the coin for the grade it is, and you aren't relying on ANACS's grading. With NGC/PCGS you can rely on their grading more. I prefer to buy PCGS coins due to the resale factor that PCGS coins have, but if I can buy the same coin in an NGC holder for less, I'd probably do it. Still 50-50?
The "smart money" has never been on ANACS over the last 10+ years. ANACS was always an "also ran" to PCGS and NGC. They fell further back in the pack when the company moved, sold and moved again just within the last few years. Chris
...i like both PCGS and NGC but i really like NGC's idea of having the coin photographed when it is slabbed. it gives you a reference of what the coin looked like when it was slabbed just by looking up the certification number. this is a smart idea. :smile
i have read about more people questioning the grade in a pcgs holder then ngc and i just read a thread about pcgs slabbing a 1917 slq as a 1916 two of them i believe i like ngc better the only problem i got with them i just sent in a dozen coins and they charge your card the minute they get them and it has been over a month and there still in grading im in the service business and i dont get payed until the service gets done and to have your money and your coins for that long is crazy they need to hire more graders if there that busy because im about to stick to raw coins and just stick them in slabs myself pcgs to me comes across as the bully company they have there own price list (thats over priced) for there coins in ther slabs so there telling you what there worth . they dont allow ngc in there reg where ngc allows pcgs man i can go on but ngc is my pick for know
A factor not yet considered is one which affects Variety collectors. PCGS only has a set number of varieties ( say Lincoln cents) they will grade and put on the label. NGC has a more encompassing group, but commonly use their VP# (i.e. VP-001 )unless you fill out the form carefully, But ANACS verifies and labels almost any common variety designator.
I just cast my vote for ANACS due to ease of use. This is for submitting coins only. When buying I prefer PCGS and NGC.
I've been a member of NGC for about 5-1/2 years, and this complaint has arisen from time to time. On one occasion, I had received a call from NGC because my card came back expired, and it was just an oversight on my part that I didn't update the renewal on my NGC account. You have to look at it from their point of view. Suppose they process your submission and are preparing to ship them to you, but the charge to your credit card doesn't go through for whatever reason. What then? It isn't quite as simple as buying merchandise at a local store. In that case, if your card is not accepted, you can either pay cash or write a check. The TPG doesn't have the luxury of an "instant" alternative, and they would have to hold the submission until the customer gets the problem corrected. Turnaround times are only projections, and sometimes they can vary from the norm because of the volume of submissions received. The TPG has no control over the "what and when" where submissions are concerned. I've had occasions when my "Economy" submissions have been processed and I've received them in about two weeks. There have been other times when they have taken about five weeks, but if you averaged all of the submissions that they usually receive each year, you will probably find that their projected turnaround times are pretty accurate. It wouldn't make sense from a business standpoint to hire additional staff for the occasional times when the submissions exceed the norm. Chris
If you like the NGC white holders try DGS. Now there's a grading outfit thats really hard on grading. I sent in an a coin that they graded as F15 cleaned and damaged. I aggred with the assesment. Then one day I thought I'll send it to PCGS ( I did crack it out) well they graded it VF20 (which made me happy) Now this was a old G$21/2 piece and no I will not post any picture.
