I knew that headline would draw attention! LOL :)

I bought 3 rolls of Hot Springs Quarters today at my bank and I noticed that the finish on these coins differed from what I expected.

    So... here's the investigation...

When I first received the 2010 Lincoln Cents I had thought that the finish resembled more of a satin finish than a regular circulation finish. Upon receiving these Hot Springs Quarters, I definitely think that something is different. I will post pictures later.

My question is to anyone who has circulation coins for Hot Springs (preferably from a bank rather than the ceremony) who can confirm this for me. Does the coin have a regular brilliant finish or a seemingly more satiny finish? It's not difficult to tell as my wife even commented on the "dull" finish even when the edges were pristine.

If anyone remembers the hub-bub surrounding Mike Meszack and his statement that the US Mint would not be making the satin finish on coins anymore. Maybe he was alluding to the fact that all coins will now have a consistent finish.

Does anyone have any help for me? Any evidence?

here's a picture of the coin. Note the satiny luster. I angled the photo so that you can see it.

note - it's the best I can do, it's cloudy today.

he may have said it isn't going to happen, but the Mint has already stated that the 2010 Mint Uncirculated Sets will have a satin finish. What I think may be the case is that ALL coins will have a satin finish and that the circulation coins will once again be the same as those in the UNC sets.

Oh great! Now we can look forward to all the business strikes looking like crap!

As for HSN and Mike Meszack, why would you ever listen to anything that man said? He certainly does NOT have an inside track to the US Mint and his misleading half truths have cost some good people a lot of money!

half truths yes, but if you pay close attention to him, he never steps over the line and lies.

He stated clearly that the 2009 will be the last of the satin finish coins. Now neither you nor I believe that the man knows something, but he used this particular phrase to sell coins. If it's true then all is good, but if it's not true then he (and HSN as well) would be guilty of misrepresenting the item he was selling. To him, it's no big deal, he has no repute within our community, but HSN makes its money from its reputation and the trust that people put in it.

Having worked in several corporations the risk that mis-stating this fact would wreak on the corporation is more than they would allow.

My guess is that he knows something somehow but can't reveal exactly what he knows or how he knows it.

I have 3 rolls of Hot Springs S&S Phillys and they are all satin looking. Maybe the mint is using the satin dies after they're no longer good for the sets to make circulation strikes like they once did with proof dies. It will be interesting to see what the mint puts in the new options for the AtB quarters (the unc set and the business strike set).

The 2010 unc Presidential Dollar sets are definitely satins and the mint stated, when I ordered them on the phone, that the regular unc sets will be satin too.

Yeah, HSN definitely appears to be full of it. But, I wonder how much damage is actually done by this lie about satins, as opposed to other misleading statements regarding investment potential. I don’t see the fact that the mint could stop satins, affecting the long term price of them too much, as each year's mintage stands on it’s own, although stopping satins could increase demand, thus cost, in the short run. If the mint were stopping satins, I’d say HSN is misleading the public by insinuating this would affect their long term potential, when in fact it should not.

who says that they are lying? If all of the circulating coins are satin finished too, then there in effect are no more satin finish coins as they will all have a "circulation" finish that just happens to be satin

Interesting analogy, guess we'll find out shortly, when the unc sets and the business strike sets are released.

Wow! That's one of the more interesting things I've read. And for which congressional seat are you running?

Using similar logic, once the oil spill has covered all our oceans, everything will be "normal" because "normal" will then mean oil-covered.

Don't take it the wrong way. I just had to chuckle when I read that line!

wierd, I know, but that's what happens when our government runs things.

I was trying to reconcile what he said to the observations of the coins that I have. I wouldn't have said it that way for the whole world!
