US Dime redesign?

The penny was redesigned this year.
The nickel was redesigned starting with the Louis and Clark/ Louisiana Purchase series.
The quarter has been redesigned all the time starting with the State Quarters, and now the National Park Quarters.
The half dollar was redesigned in 1976 for bicentennial (along with quarter), but then changed back to normal afterwards.
The dollar coin has been redesigned with the Sacagawea design and the Presidents.

    Are we missing something?

YES!! The US Mint has forgotten their dimes! US Dimes have been the same since 1946, besides the metal composition change in '64! Dimes have been the same for over 60 YEARS!! Are there any plans for a dime redesign in upcoming years? I would like to know because the dimes are getting pretty boring. I don't even buy rolls of them to search, and I only have two in my collection (one I may sell).

With pennies, you can find in a roll new 2010 union shield, all four of the 2009 designs, the various years of memorial cents, and an occasional wheat cent. In nickels, there are the Louis and Clark designs, and then the Jefferson facing forward design, and the standard nickels from 1938 to 2003. Also, in rolls of half dollars, who knows what you may find if you're lucky!!

It is very profitable for the mint to make more designs, because when there are new designs, people are more willing to buy an uncirc. set for their collection. People don't want to have basically the same coins sitting around in a box - nothing is wrong with variety!

Good thought.. I should start keeping a stack myself.
Roosevelt Dimes may be the next denomination for me to get an entire set of - I already pretty much completed memorial cents, and I'm halfway on jefferson nickels.

The mint will find a way to uglify the Roosevelt Dime.
Probably throw some kinda oddball idea out there, putting electronic devices that have changed our lives, have the toaster on the 2011 dime, the hair straightener on the 2012.
Trust me, the mint always finds a way to ruin coins of beauty. It won't be long.

Personally I thought they ruined the dime when they went to the FDR obverse, I was happy with lady Mercury!! My opinion on this subject is that the dime will not change for quite awhile. The US Mint is trying to get everyone excited about their new quarters, I didn't fall for the State quarters in 1999 and I'm not gonna start with this America the Beautiful idea either!! Besides I'm still waiting for the 5 ouncer!

  8. Some people have suggested that the the Government views the dime as too small for people to look at and see any new designs they come up with.

Some people have also suggested putting Ronald Regan on it. I don't see it happening...he's loved by some but hated by others...Whereas everyone loves Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, etc.

Personally I think the only time we will see a major change on any of our coins is if any of our presidents do not survive their term...Which I hope does not happen for any of them...but it is possible. (The job certainly is stressfull enough to cause a heart attack!)

For the Roosevelt dime, what would they really do to change it? The rotating themes are covered by the quarters, the cent is symbolic of the union, the nickel is...well...Jefferson "wrote" the constitution, so it must have something to do with that. Yet Roosevelt guided us through WWII. I COULD see them putting some sort of WWII memorial theme on it, but I don't think they will. Again, the argument about it being to small to see whatever they put on it. I don't buy it, but that's my personal opinion.

I have a feeling this one is in for the long haul.

  9. I think FDR will be on the dime for a long time, perhaps until 2046 (100 year mark). The coin is way to small to really do anything with as far as a commemorative goes. TC

Yeah.. I'm not saying that I don't like the current dime design, but it has been used for too long. The mint could do a redesign like the cent, where the obverse stays the same but the reverse is modified.

Personally I would love to see older coin design's return. walking liberty half's, merc dimes, flying eagle, barbers, morgans, etc, etc, etc.

    . . . SIXTY YEARS! for a coin design!

PLEASE! Time to pop out something new. Hopefully not another dead president. That idea's old and tired and time to shelf it.

Just curious (and I was joking about Regan). Is the process the same for changing a coin design as it is for currency. I know there was a push to change the Fifty Dollar Bill to Regan that hasn't been successful. I guess congress wouldn't go for it. But I thought that the mint didn't need an act of congress to change coins if they had exisited for more than 25 years. I remember reading this somewhere when I started researching the Kennedy Half Dollar and found that special legislation was required. In short the dime hasn't changed since 1946 as previously pointed out. Could the mint theoretically change it? I know the president has the power to appoint mint officers but can the mint just design whatever without congressional approval?

Not trying to hijack this thread and I would welcome a moderator splitting it into one entitled "Laws regarding coin and currency changes".
