Well shoot, I thought you owned the coin. Are they your pictures? I was going to comment on the reverse picture as it looked a little dark next to the obverse, they looked like your pictures, but just not as good as your pictures are now. Still think the coin shouldn't have been graded...Gashes are just too plentiful.
You know that's funny, because I really never get these threads right! I always grade the coin rather than guess what I think the TPG graded it
Just so you know, I love to hear that. It means you are really interested. To answer, I have to let the poll go at least 24 hours. I posted it after midnight last night. We need to give those without access to a computer during the day a chance to chime in later tonight. I will post the answer before I retire for the evening which is usually between 3-4AM.
I guess once the thread falls off the first page for 5 hours it is time to post the answer. I really wanted Doug's opinion. Maybe next time. RLM is the only one who got it right and no, I don't agree with the grade.
rlm got it right??? did I miss something? No knock on rlm, but he voted MS-63 FS. Nobody said MS-65 FS from what I read.
Mike, Follow the posts quoted. Dick stated the the TPG would issue MS65FS but he didn't care, to him the coin was still only an MS63 FS. The sentence in red is the key statement.
My original assessment based on the original photos was MS-65, my next post after the larger reverse image was posted, I gave it the F/S designation. So, I was correct with PCGS and I say they are more than 60% correct. Thanks for a fun thread.
What do think this was ? http://www.cointalk.com/t112983-2/#post916325 For PCGS to even grade that coin is an insult to the hobby.
I say MS 63 FS. Those nicks on Jefferson's cheek could not be in a worse place. As with any FS the strike is far above average. Nice coin, but for me, the cheek nicks are a deal breaker...especially on such a common coin/date.
I really can't get over you guys agreeing that this is not damage Would any of you actually buy this coin ? I mean if I was Jeff collector and somebody offered to pay me $100 just to put this coin in my collection - I would say no. Do you need to look at it again ??? Those are not bag marks people. That is plain old fashioned damage !
Paul, I voted MS65 with FS -- PCGS might have given it a 64 instead since you say they grade a point or so below NGC on Jeffersons. I assume the marks on the chin are discounted as you have explained before that Jeffersons have these marks rather commonly and are therefore graded differently -- a Buffalo with such marks would not be in a 65 holder. Looks FS to me. Now that grade might astound some but I am basing it on other Jeffersons you have posted and how you have explained they are graded. *Now I have read the thread -- I wrote the above without others' views or knowing the actual grade PCGS assigned. I voted what I thought PCGS would grade and assumed Lehigh wanted to shock us. The marks seem pretty severe In Doug's blown-up photo, I will admit. Also, since the obverse is more important in the grade, it is hard to justify a 65. I still think the rest of the coin is nice -- no, I wouldn't buy it but it is interesting for learning purposes. By the way, Doug and others voted what they would grade it, not what grade would they expect PCGS to grade it. I voted based on how I thought PCGS graded the coin because that's how I interpreted the poll.*
I think you are giving me more credit than I deserve. I did not really get PCGS's grade right. What I got right was you thinking process.
Yeah I realize that. But that only makes it worse - not better. Damaged coins are considered ungradeable - period, end of story. Is there actually anybody here who thinks that those marks were caused by another nickel striking this one ? What would that nickel be - the size of a piano ? And if you do not, then it must be damage. So to assign any grade to that coin, let alone an MS grade, that's just wrong.
