Sent my 1914-D to PCGS for Secure Plus - what do you think they will do?

I just sent in my first coin to Secure Plus. It was originally in an NGC 64 holder, then I crossed it to PCGS 64, but I always felt it should be in a 65 holder. Just curious, but what do you all think PCGS will do with it?

I believe it will get the 64+.

What happen if your coin after review is determined to be a MS65. Will they re-slab it under the Secure Plus review?

My prediction is the grade will be unchanged. My original opinion on the coin hasn't changed either.

i'm curious about the Red, Red/Brown, and Brown grades.

This coin looks to my eye like it's a Red/Brown.

Any idea why the red in the coin is not being acknowledged?

Or are the red spots that I am seeing not good enough to be called red?

(I've seen some REALLY BROWN copper coins that are obviosuly brown)

I could see it being 64+, Is that a nick on the left stalk? Could it be RB vice BN? I think I see red in it (I am red/green deficient and it looks like there is hints of red in it.)

I believe it wil stay unchanged due to the obverse surface. Its a very nice strike, but the obverse fields seem to have an oatmeal texture...

Just from what I could detect at this photo angle, the bag marks on the Obverse behind the head, next to the eye, very front of the check, three marks in the mid beard area and above the 14 in date would keep it MS64.

There ya go. To get the RB designation a coin must be at least 5% original mint Red. That coin is not.

Ngc did not start the+ till May 28 2010 & Pcgs add there Plus about the same time too.but that 1914-D should have a + added :thumb:

This also brings up a question I have; when submitting coins in the hopes of getting a higher grade, is it better to crack them out and send them in or better to send them in the slab? It just seems to me that if a grader knows what someone has already deemed the coin this would bias them. I know that objectively it shouldn't matter, but subconsciously I'm sure it does.

I left the coin in the PCGS holder when I sent it in, and I never sent it to CAC. PCGS will remove it before they put it through the Secure Plus process so they can lazer the surface and grade it, etc.

Although you can't see it in the photo, this coin oozes and glows with deep magenta luster. Everyone who sees it, including me, just drops their jaw. But it is correctly designated as brown - there is not enough underlying red to give it a red brown designation.

As far as the marks, I'm not sure what you're seeing tpsadler, but most of what you mention is just not there. Of course there is the mark to the left of the wheat stalk on the reverse, and there are a couple very minute marks on the beard/face, but there is nothing above the date and what you see behind the head are not marks, more of very very slight darker toning or streaking.

Any way, thank you for all your comments. I suspect it will go 64+ but we'll see in a couple weeks.

I'm on the opposite extreme when it comes to grading. I almost never deal with high grade material that's not in Mint packaging (ie Proof Sets, Mint Sets.)

I'm more concerned with the nuances of how much to deduct for the bold X across the face or whether the corrosion is light, medium, heavy, very heavy or copper ore. I'll leave the 11 MS and now 11 + designations to you. Are there - designations in our future?

That is a 65 coin, I don't care what NGC or PCGS says. I've seen tons of 65's that have more hits and are less appealing than that coin.

    Good Luck!

Thanks GDJ ... youve cleared up the Red/Brown question I've had for months!

I can see the coin in a 5 holder no problem. Mostly the TPG grade keys liberally but in the case with this date I see them consistantly harder. The coin is the coin no matter what the holder or given technical grade and your particular coins value will never be listed under any price guide spreadsheet no mater what they give it. They can't make a spreadsheet large and fine enough to correctly catagorize all copper designations. Those coins just swing too widly on color, strike etc.

I like your idea of regrading your collection for star and plus designations.I think I will do the same with my lincolns when I am complete. Probably take the whole batch to a show and have them done at once. Mainly for registry reasons and extra points. It is like sniping a coin now if you buy it graded and have it stared or plussed later and fun if you can pull it off. Just another layer of the game. JMO Matt

I personally am not a big believer in extra stickers or stars or shields to value my coins because I agree a coin speaks for itself, it is what it is (also, I don't personally participate in the registry system). And I don't actually plan to send in all my coins as even for a dealer it is costly for the Secure Plus service ($55/coin), but I always thought this coin was PQ so thought I'd just give it a shot and see what happens. I also submitted my 1916 MPL PCGS MS65 BN since it too is PQ and I wanted to see what they'd do with it.

    64+ for sure.

I think you should start a registry. That'd be cool.

As for the coin in question. The mark on the left of the stalk on the reverse is nasty, but it would not surprise me if it was forgotten about in the grading process.
I really want to say 66, but that mark is stopping me from saying it. But I'm not so sure the TPG will refrain. It will come back as MS65, with a SLIM chance at MS65+
Actually.. I'll explain more.. I think if you cracked it out of the slab, THEN sent it in, it would come back MS65+, but seeing as how you sent it in IN the slab, it will come back 64+
