Here is a nice source to see the difference. Look at the 6. The small date "6" has the end of the inside loop almost vertical to the end of the top loop. The large date has the end of the top loop much farther towards the "right" ( the 0 ), than the inside loop end.

Your picture is not focused, but as best I can see that is a large date.

I agree with RLM on it being a large date. Sorry for your troubles. Luck favors a prepared mind.

well I see what youre talking about, I jsut couldnt really tell in the red book.

none the less I found 14 nice 1960's large dates so far. nearly perfect if it wasnt for a few nicks, looks like they were thrown in the counting machine at a bank, probably someones collection that a kid thought it would be ok to snatch.

Definitely Large Date. I remember looking at tons shortly after I started collecting while they were still common in circulation. I don't remember them being that close. It seemed like the Small Date was close to O shaped in my memory.

Anyhow, a backup is to draw a line from the top of the 1 to the top of the 0 and if the top of the 9 lines up, it's a Small Date. If it's higher, then it's a Large Date.

Plan C is to look at the loop of the 9. The Large Date is a little more closed and the Small Date is a little more open.

I always assume that everyone knows I mean IMAGINARY when I say draw a line. You know what they say about that...
