Great Walkers people! A top 5 for me as well. Here are a couple of hard workers pulled into retirement just in the nick of time. :)

Nice Walkers, everyone! Some of those toners are amazing! Illini gets a thumbs up for helping out another collector, I would have had trouble giving up that coin at almost any price (almost!)

I'm not too big on proofs, but I had to have one proof Walker, here she is:

I do not own this coin (its kinda a pet peeve of mine when people post a coin they dont own or never owned without saying its not theirs), but I consider this the nicest toned walker I have ever seen. I think it's overgraded at a NGC 66 but these colors are amazing. Has anyone here owned this coin or seen it in hand before?

Wow, that is a beauty. These are by far my favorite half dollars. Probably my favorite denomination $0.50 or larger.

Since you don't own the coin, I won't feel bad typing my response. At first glance, that coin appears to have very questionable toning. The colors don't look right, the progression doesn't look right, and the overall look doesn't look right. I don't care that it is in an NGC holder, I would not buy that coin with your money.

The best photograph I have ever seen of a rainbow toned walker was part of the Anaconda inventory. Here is the photo of a coin I don't own.

FWIW, the toning on this coin is just as questionable as the coin you posted.

I agree to some extent. There are some toning breaks that look natural to me in the one I posted. But yes some of the colors are kinda iffy, but I think mostly because they are unique. If its AT'd I think it was done over the course of a long time and mixed in with acceptable colors. To ME it is just barely on the right side of market acceptable and I would pay strong money for it. But not as strong as was being asked when I found it.

Now to me the anaconda coin to me falls short of acceptable. It looks very AT and doesnt have the natural toning breaks or flow, and looks like a quick job that you see on some moderns or those blatant peace dollars you see raw on ebay. Plus I consider the source(anaconda) to be highly questionable after the blatant attempt at passing off that infamous Peace dollar.

The Peacegate drama did not condemn Anaconda IMO. They publicly stated what happened. I don't remember all the details but remember thinking that Anaconda was not the culprit after reading the entire thread on the CU forum. Additionally, the walker offered on their site was in an NGC holder.

Anaconda was not in the business of artificially toning coins. They bought slabbed rainbow toned coins and then made substantial profits on the back of Brandon Kelley's photographic skills. I find nothing particularly condemning about their business practice even though they sold their fair share of artificially toned slabbed coins over the years. I even bought a few. Here is a cool one.

Selling slabbed AT coins does not automatically mean you were the submitter.

I am not as experienced as you or most so my opinion carries little weight. However the first time I saw that Anaconda coin I immidiately thought AT without a doubt in my mind. Therefore my assumption was that there was no way a seasoned veteran could think it was NT unless they were trying to push it thru knowingly. All that being said I never saw the coin in hand, only pics, and quite frankly I think their pics kinda stink. They almost look like illustrations colored in with crayons.

I think your research of toned Peace Dollars has made your opinion relevant at this point. I never saw the Peacegate dollar in hand either but remember wanting to vomit after seeing the photo, just like you. Like I said, Anaconda had no problems selling slabbed AT coins, I just don't think that equates to them being the coin doctor.

With regards to Walkers, I think they are almost as difficult to find with attractive rainbow toning as Peace Dollars. When you find one with spectacular rainbow toning, you must at least question it's authenticity. This is the same point that David Hall was trying to make about Peace Dollars, although much more clumsily. Questioning the authenticity of the toning on these coins does not condemn the coins to AT, rather it helps ensure that a fewer number are slabbed due to increased scrutiny.

MJ on the CU forums has the best rainbow toned walkers with a natural appearance that I have ever seen. If we compare the two coins in this thread to his, the differences are striking. I consider both walkers in this thread to be QT and not market acceptable despite the fact they reside in NGC holders.

I agree 100% that you must at least ask yourself if the coin is AT every time you are considering a coin. And you should ask yourself 100 times if its in a way you have never seen before like the case is with the coin I posted here. And of course theres always the pictures vs in hand debate which often time has no solution unless you buy the coin and then return it.

    I own this.

    More back.

At least this is in hand. Ugly but mine & my oldest.

I spent about 5 min finding it, taking a snap of it (& and it shows) and posting it.

Rougher than a Cob vs Freud theory.

Dok U Mint: I don't see anything ugly about your coin. It looks like a nice circ walker to me!

Here's another circ Walker from the interesting year, 1917:
