Nah. PCGS doesn't allow you to see the coin any better. It's surrounded by a 'somewhat' clear, rubber ring that is still cloudy. I have broken a few out for albums but generally frown on that practice. I keep the label with the coin if I do it. I prefer the NGC slabs and really like the edgeviews. I don't like their old holders, but I do wish all my slabs were edgeview. If I really like a coin that I may not find again, the slab makes no difference to me. I like NGC because of the new edgeviews which do allow you see the edge and their special label designations look really sharp. For example, the first spouse labels, the Lincoln commem silver dollars, the coins from the USS Republic shipwreck recovery (showing the ship), the 2006 ASE reverse proof 20th anniversary, etc, etc....It sounds like a lot but they really don't do the special labels for much. There isn't a lot you can do to make a slabbed coin look better in presentation, but NGC accomplished it. All the PCGS labels are the same. I'm sure some people don't care, but I appreciate the added uniqueness. Also think the star designation is nice. I often search ebay for "NGC star" just to see what premium stuff is on there that might interest me. Can't do with PCGS. I only have a few PCGS slabs, and they're fine. But they get the 2nd place ribbon from me.
Here. I would have combined the PCGS equivalent but Odyssey gave NGC exclusive rights to encapsulate the hoard. You guys can decide which you like best. (These are not mine BTW.)
It was said in the OP's original statement that this was not a value debate or a buy the coin not the plastic debate. He just wanted peoples opinions on what they thought looked better having nothing to do with value. Just cosmetic
I do not own very many NGC coins, and not a single one with the new prongs. I do like the look, although I think they should make the prongs transparent for imaging.
I thought PCGS was the best, but after the buying the coins I wanted at the grade and quality I wanted I kept on finding and buying NGC. Now I look for NGC first and PCGS second but its all good .I am now looking to join NGC and submit my own coins for grading. But yesterday I bought a NGC 1958 MS67 dime for $8 on ebay hard to beat that price when just to grade a coin from both of these guys cost more than that
I would bet that's coming in a few years. An idea probably already thought of by them, but they can't release the best stuff initially because they would lose profits. Gotta have people re-submit to get the latest and greatest slab. That requires a new, mundane feature that could have been implemented in the last version!! I always use the Ipod as a classic example of this logic. The generation 1, the very first, debuted near the end of 2001. Look at all the upgrades it's went through in less than 8 years! The gen 1's were so plane jane, they may as well have printed a Model-T on the cover to dress them up! Basically, they sucked. They didn't even have color options! I mean, come on. Who are we fooling?? But, we had nothing better at the time so people paid big money to get the 80's looking things! The public ate em up. You can't tell me all or most of the features the gen 7s (or whatever we're up to now), couldn't have been developed in 2002. Each generation is just a little bit better. I've got a 3rd gen. nano, 8 GB and I'm probably supposed to feel like it's worn out and obsolete so I should buy a new one. The wife got a 5th and I should probably be jealous. But their marketing hasn't gotten to me yet. You have to give them credit though, for all the extra revenue they've derived from improvements they've purposely held back. TPG slabs seem to be no different.
I like the new NGC holder over the PCGS. I will say that I have found that the NGC holder is easier to crack out over PCGS. But over I like to be able to look at the edges of the coins and more light is able to surround the coin when viewed. JMO.
