Time to put aside the buy the coin not the plastic talk for this thread. Because it's all about the plastic. Today I obtained my first PCGS slabbed coin. Maybe I'm just used to NGC slabs. At first, the PCGS seemed to pale when put side by side by the NGC slab. However PCGS doess seem to allow you see the coin better given it's clear plastic. Anybody else have an opinon on which plastic slab you prefer? Value and prices aside.
I've got some of both and it don't matter a newt to me about the plastic. Quite seriously the packaging of both holders looks adequate and the same to me.
I like NGC's holder, especially with toned coins, the contrast with the toned coins and the white background is really nice I wish NGC's plastic sold as much as PCGS's plastic though.
Actually there's not much difference between them when the tile nippers are used to start the opening process.
I can't really explain it, but the Ngc holders look almost cheap or like selfslabbers to me. I like the Pcgs holders appearance and stackability. Although I do kinda like the edgeview holders .
I agree. The ngc holders look cheap to me as well. I have always liked the look of the pcgs holders better. To each his own though
I prefer the look of the PCGS plastic, and I absolutely HATE the NGC design with the prongs. I have one of each that won't be opened, but any future coins that I may get in slabs...from either company...won't be for long.
The edgeview holder is great for seeing the edge and rim of the coin and it allows for much more light to get to the coin when photographing. The problem is that the stupid prongs overlap the coin and almost ruin the photos.
Truly the fact that it does indeed cover some of the coin is the main reason I dislike it. Otherwise it wouldn't be too bad at all. On some of the larger coins I've seen online it doesn't look as bad, but on some of the smaller coins it obscures as far in to get some of the detail.
At first, I didn't think I would like the NGC Edge View slabs, but once I got a few Morgans in them, I realized as Lehigh said, that it allows much more light to hit the coin. Even smaller coins don't look bad in them because the coin is no longer totally dwarfed by the plastic insert completely surrounding the coin. I can live with the prongs obscuring some of the rim, and really, it isn't a distraction at all for me. I also have a lot of PCGS-slabbed Morgans, and I'm not a big fan of toners in these slabs. To me, the rainbows and Tid-E-Bowls seem rather blah in the PCGS slabs. The white background of the NGC slab seems to make the colors stand out better. Blast white Morgans do look better in the PCGS slabs. Chris
I think as stated above that toned coins look better in the NGC slabs set with the white background, but a non toned coin to me looks best in the clear PCGS slabs.
For some reason I have a really hard time getting good images with the NGC white background. The colors just don't come out right. I have the same problem with the old PCI holders. I still buy NGC coins but PCGS is my favorite.
