What's up with 1977 cents? They're all bad!

After going through numerous cent boxes, I've never found a 1977 cent that didn't have the monument steps completely worn smooth. I've found 1978s, 1979s, and 1970 through 1976s with visable steps, some in pretty decent shape. But never, 1977.

    Anyone else notice this?

I have some for sorting, I will check it out. We are looking for monument steps that are well defined, right ?

I have found at least 10 40%ers that looked like they had a copper core and blended in with the others. I recommend looking at each coin, but your choice of course.

I went to 6 banks today and found about $10 in loose halves.....nothing. Two banks that usually have boxes didn't order this week, so I'm stuck with no halves to search until TH. :(

I checked through about a dozen 1977 cents and the steps were not visible on any of them and it did not look like it was due to wear. I think they were weak strikes or low reliefs that year. Just my guess.
The lack of detail of the memorial steps seemed consistent with 1977's from both P & D. I am now curious to see if the "S" mints are also lacking detail for that year.

i finally looked through the 3, rolls of lincoln cents from the nail/tanning salon. they are all 60's and 70's "S" mm's! i never found any "S", from those decades, although i don't really go after any other cents, but wheats...

i will keep them, its only $1.50. it just makes me wonder how it happened? maybe some teenage girl got into daddies or grandpa's coin collection and rolled them up.... nothing more important then tanning or getting your nails done:rolling:

lets just hope the two rolls of quarters and 1 roll of dimes are all silver! i am saving them for this week, to give me something to do before the coin show.

  9. LTtrain, are you sure that half is from the 1970s? I have Never seen a clad that worn, and it's got the look of silver based on your pictures. Could it be a 68?

Coinstar machines have led to a mini-renaissance for people who like to sort through rolls of cents. It's quite common now to find cents from the early 60s with mint luster. In 2007, more cents were put into circulation by coinstar machines than new ones were issued by the mint!

    10gary22,
I'd be satisfied to see a 1977 with barely visable steps!

If you have some 1970-S cents you could look at them very carefully for the valuable "small date" variety. There are many threads here on CT with examples of what to look for if you are interested.

Thank you for checking your 1977s. It must have been a bad year!

Positive. You can see the top of the 197 in the right light, with the last one looking like the top part of either a three or eight, hard to tell because it's so worn. Also, it's got copper reeding on the side, another givewaway.

Maybe that's the reason one of the boxes I got from my mom lacked the rolls from the 1940's ? I mean, there are 20's, 30's & 50's but the 40's just aren't there.
