What do you all think on grade and value? I have an idea on grade and what I think it's worth, but I'd like other's opinions.
Clear fields, frosty devices... Beautiful coin. Not familiar with grading standards for Morgans, but I'll take a stab in the dark and guess MS65.
The seller is advertising it as extremely rare. However, Philadelphia minted more Morgans that year than the other branches, at 16, 802,000. He wants offers over $90.
I don't trust the seller's photos. These aren't scans, so where is the luster? I'd ask for direct photos with better lighting. Chris
At the price that coin chould be around an MS-65. i think it hits a little towards the MS- 64 side, possibly MS- 63 depending on the facial scratches...
I would stay away from that coin, I'd call it AU, and imo it's been thumbed. There's a big price jump in MS65 for the '90 P and that's probably why it was thumbed, to trick someone into believe it was a gem.
No way! For the first time I've called a coin AU and Doug said MS. Well the worlds coming to an end, so it doesn't matter what the coin grades.
I would say MS-65 as it looks nice IMO,but I stick to the TPG slabs with the Morgans for safety so what do I know?:goofer:
To me it looks like there's some rub in the fields to the left of Liberty, on the nose, top of the cheek, and the hair. Imo this is a very well struck coin and the weakness in the hair I circled is from rub. The two brown streaks that start in the fields under Liberty's jaw and extend onto the device itself, coupled with the rough surfaces of Liberty's face, imo are signs of an old thumbing. Imo these pics are meant to deceive people into believing they're buying a gem coin.
65- CC 64- O My point for the coin at hand is the fact the coin jumps from $150 in MS-64 to nearly $2400 in MS-65 and might I add $18,000 in MS-66. That being said the seller wants $90, making the coin in the sellers opinion MS-63 / boarder-line MS-64.
Yep, stay away from this coin. Better pictures are needed for sure, according to the pics, that thing has no luster. Doug is right though, it would slab MS65 or 66 with luster, but not by our standards. Have you seen the MS65's on the market? Most of them are crap, and I would grade them MS64's, just too many marks in prime focal areas. This coin looks like something I'd see graded MS66. He is asking $90+ for the coin, that right there is suspicious to me. Better pictures are even needed to take a stab at it. Me thinks he is hiding something. Probably a good cleaning.
Zach, I'm not disagreeing with what you said about the OP's coin. Judging from the photos, I think it lacks any luster at all, and the photos were taken at that slight angle intentionally to hide that fact. I was just curious what you would say about these. Both are graded 65 by PCGS. Chris
I agree that from that picture it's a 65/66. But I'd want better picture before I bought it. The dim lighting where the neck meets the jaw is of suspicion to me. But that cheek is very clean.
