Just curious. I know I've heard of 90% silver 1965 dimes being found, so were there and 90% silver 1965 quarters ever found? Or to the main point of this thread, are there any known 1971 40% silver halves?

I think the Redbook has a typo and it should be 1974-D and 1977-D. Those do exist, but I've never heard of a 1971-D.

Oh No ! I just went back through $100 worth of halves and weighed all the 1971's and 77's. Now I gotta do it all again for 1974's ?:crying:

An easier way to identify would be to look at the edge and compare to a know 40% half and only weigh ones that are hard to see or a suspicious to you.

Actually, with my eyesight as it is, weighing them is the fastest. I set them aside and start adding them to the scale and just add the weights for 3-4 by putting them in the tray 1 at a time. But If I could see worth a darn, I would use your method for sure.

    Thanks

Sound, man, sound. I can't hear at all in my right ear and lost half in my left, but I can still tell that silver ring when you drop it onto a surface and it wobbles until it's flat.

Do I try the hearing test with or without my hearing aids ?. Man, gettin' old ain't for wusses. Still, I can weigh them pretty fast, it's sorting them out that takes the time. LOL It's been so long since I found any Silver, I doubt I would recognize it if there was an Ingersol-Rand stamp on it.

Haha... I haven't worn hearing aids in well over a decade, so I can't help you there... reverse slope hearing loss means I don't have trouble hearing higher-pitched things, I struggle with lower-pitched noises.

And also the 2010. Of course it seems to make sense since 1971 was right after silver clad ceased and 1977 was right after silver clad proofs were used for some BICENTENIAL coinage.

Then again, I haven't actually seen or heard of any myself till this post.

You know, I got a gut feeling that the real chance of finding one is pretty slim. I really don't think re-rolling the 10 rolls will make a difference. I still have a number of Cent rolls to do. And every once in a while I find a variety of the Cents. Still, it would be better to go back through the halves than watch TV. My game got blacked out anyway. LOL

Can't hurt to try... well, I occasionally get pains in my hand, but that's gradually going away as I get more and more used to searching...

I really hate to bring this up as you are weighing away, but you can't really tell that way, even if all were uncirculated. As 40% silver was 11.5 +/- 0.4 grams or
11.1-11.9 grams and the clad was 11.34 +/- 0.454 grams or
10.886 - 11.794 grams, so most would overlap anyway....... tolerances from Breen's encyclopedia.
