This may help you search if you are only interested in collecting half dollars:

-Any date prior to 1964 (90% silver--Franklins, Walking Liberty (rare), Barbers (really rare), Seated Liberty (one in a million))
    -1964 & 1964-D (90% Silver--start of the Kennedy series)
    -1965-1969 (40% silver)
    -1970 NIFC
    -1987 NIFC
-2001-2010 NIFC (2001 P's were issued for circulation, but not D's)
-Any Kennedy with an "S" mintmark will either be a proof or silver or possibly both (a silver proof or a clad proof)
-There were also 1965-1967 SMS (Special Mint Set) coins issued---they are very rare also, but if you do find one they are proof-like)

From there, you can look at individual coins if you want to check for error coins---

The 1970 NIFC is also 40% silver.

this is horrible, i need to find halves!! the banks just give me a weird look when i ask, like i am asking for euros or something...

i even asked a few tellers if they ever get any loose, and they all have said "not in so many years".

i guess halves are dead in circulation around pittsburgh. i had one dealer tell me, he can get me unsearched halves . also he had a large fee to get them.

my friend works at dunbar and said they always are getting rolls of halves shipped to banks. i just don't understand and am itching to get a box or even a roll of them :(.

Those tellers are just brushing you off because they don't want to order them for you---they CAN order them, since they are still available from Loomis, Wells Fargo, and a couple of others. My bank orders 4 boxes for me EVERY week---and I could order as many as I want if I wanted more than that. Another reason that they don't like to fool with them, is that the boxes are HEAVY---almost 25 pounds each!

Firstly, unless you have an account at the banks that you are visiting, you can almost forget them ordering them for you. Go to the bank that you do have an account and ask the head teller or the manager to order them. They still may not want to---and they may charge you a fee (it depends on the bank and your relationship with them). Good luck and let us know how you fare---

Oh, and rule #1 when you do get the boxes---don't return them to the same bank---open an account at a second bank and return them there---

P.S. I love it when I pick up my boxes and see the ones that are taped up and falling apart---I know that those boxes have been around awhile and are falling apart from being moved and restacked, etc. Those boxes usually pay off the best!

I love the boxes that are falling apart as well. I've had the best luck in those. Some banks that I've talked to said they aren't on the list of available coins from their supplier anymore, so some banks might not be giving the run around.

The bank I order from gets theirs from Dunbar and will get me as many as I want.

Panda, if your buddy works for Dunbar, can't he just buy them for you from his company? It would seem like that would be one way for you to get half boxes.

I have two coming in today or tomorrow depending on when the bank gets their coins for the week, I'm pumped.

My boxes usually come on Thursday (today!). I'm pumped as well---my last 8 boxes have gotten me:

    -3 Franklins
    -4 90%
    -over 30 40%
    -1 Proof
    -3 NIFC
    -and a few error coins

Dimes are tough to find silver here too. I always try to get about $100 worth of small coins when I go, and at least 1-5 rolls of dimes. I like to look at different coins. Cents get boring after a bit. LOL. But I haven't found a silver (pre 65) Dime in more than a year now.

I have a question about the dollar coins for some of you. The teller at the bank where I typically pick up half dollars, just called me and told me that someone cashed in approximately $1000 worth of dollar coins. Their all rolled so they have no idea what kind of dollar coins they are (although obviously nothing old).

Are these worth buying and sorting through in your opinion(s)? I guess the only thing you'd be looking for is error coins correct? The same person who has been bringing in $100s of halves brought in the dollar coins. The half cash-ins typically have some silver in them as this person is cashing in a collection according to the head teller....I can never catch up with them though.

thanks for the tips. i have accounts at two different banks and i tried 3-4 different branches of each. the one i use the most, rotates there tellers i guess. as soon as i get to know them, they are gone! i was even willing to open accounts at different banks, just to get them to order some.

i have not asked my friend at dunbar, but the way they work, it don't seem like they would allow that. that place has crazy rules, i guess i can't blame them. everyone in the building has to have a gun! he started when he was 19, and even was able to get some sort of special permit to have a handgun. he was only allowed to carry it from work and back, but still.

I guess the only way to tell is buy a handful and see what you find.. Buy a couple hundred dollars worth, you can't lose money on the deal. I am going through bank rolls of dollars to get a complete set of the SBA dollars and the P mint marks for the pres dollars as I only get D mint marks in uncirculated rolls from banks.

That guy was me :) I searched 3 boxes and only found 2 NIFC coins. Then I got this box and found 41, obviously someone cashed out their collection in my box, so it was not a surprise to also find silver in that one.

I checked ebay real quick and they do not really bring any premium because all the coins minted were sold uncirculated to collectors, so I doubt they ever will. It just seemed a shame to put them back into circulation as I know a lot of people need them to complete their JFK sets. Speaking of sets, I went from 2 NIFC to only missing 1 NIFC with that box!!!

Basically, they are not worth anything, but still cool enough that I did not want to spend.

I do as well, and I saw a roll of pre-60 go on ebay for $4, so there is some premium.

Ok so i got a new bank to order me halves and im going to try to get this bank to keep ordering them (without a charge, last bank started to charge =\) and possibly pull things for me, so what exactly works as a 'bribe' for the tellers like brownies or cookies? etc.

    Thanks

I usually bring a batch of cookies when I pick up my halves---but I don't think that it makes a difference as to whether or not they order them for me--I know they'll do it anyway--so far, so good. I just do it as a nice gesture for the tellers that have to pack those 4 25 pound boxes from the vault to the counter. I'm sure they would rather not, but they do it as a service to me as a customer. The cookies and/or goodies sure can't hurt---
