Hey everyone I was working with my grandma yesterday and we were helping her friends move into an old house. We were throwing away old boxes and this was in an old, broken safe. I was just looking for some general information on it, and it'd be nice to know what it was worth.

I'd assume it's a Quarter Eagle. Not a bad find!

Wow that's pretty cool lol. When I found it, I saw the 2 1/2 dollars and thought it was pretty cool because I've never even heard of something like that. So is it what? 70% gold? 80%?

Also, do you usually try to get your coins graded? or leave them raw? and what is a good place to send it to to get graded?

For a coin like this, the quarter eagle, for which many many of them have been faked (counterfeited) over the years, you would do best to handle the coin very carefully and send it into NGC or PCGS for authentification. If you do have it graded, please post pics and tell us the grade it receives.

Wow, great find and good for you!! If you want to see an approximate ebay value here's a sale going on right now for one the same year as yours. good luck with doing your research! :hail: here's the ebay number, make sure your coin matches the appearance. From what I can tell your coin looks good. 90% gold

    I can't believe a thread about a quarter eagle that I didn't get to first! :D

That is a nice coin, I'd say it is AU, I don't see anything that shouts out to me that it is fake, but you just never know. I'd also want to see the thing in hand before saying it is cleaned or not as well. But that is what a Third Party Grader is for in this situation.
So yes, do get it graded from PCGS or NGC, I'd recommend getting it graded with PCGS, maybe look around to a local coin dealer, and ask him about the grade, and see if he won't send it along on his next batch so you don't have to deal with becoming a member of PCGS, and all the fees that come with it.

    Good luck buddy.

    ;)

@ T$: LOL! I tried not to say too much about it so you could come along and fill in the parts I left undefined. ;)

That is pretty darn cool. It is 90% gold and do not clean, wipe, wash or do anything else to the coin since you will reduce its value if you do so.
