I dont mark the coin, I mark the wrapper, helping me remember that I have searched through that roll.
I never understood why searchers mark the coins. I find it rather annoying. Whats the benifit? To let someone know they aren't the first to search that coin? Plus, as stated earlier, what if someone else wants that coin but now there is a nice big black X on it? Disrespectful in my opinion.
......and then it goes back to the bank and another collector rips open the wrapper and.......... Chris
I understand it I understand why people do it. It lets them know if they're getting coins back that they've already searched through. If they are, they need to rethink their approach to buy and dump banks. Personally, I don't mark them because I'm searching with my son and he always gets mad when he finds coins with marks on them. We're trying to fill the Kennedy books for him so he knows they won't be able to go in and in his mind once he finds one with a mark he loses some of his interest to keep searching. Another reason I don't mark them is unless I put my name of them how do I know it's my mark? I've seen 100's of marked coins with every variation of marks and drilled holes. 10 different guys in your area could be X'ing coins.
Why? Why not put them into a container marked "SEARCHED" and when you get enough of each denomination, re-roll them and sell them off?
Chris, its not meant for others, its just for me so I dont waste more time looking over something that I already spent time doing. if someone opens them and rewraps them..well oh well, maybe they missed something that I missed originally or put different coins in it.:kewl::goofer: Not much I could do about it my friend.. Shrek
I don't mark coins, but I do sort coins by date range, roll them, than mark the wrapper with the date range of the coins that are in the wrapper
I get pretty irritated when I am searching rolls and they have a big x on them or one person is painting the whole obverse pink. I also see alot of the sides marked. The problem is that it seems most of the people doing this are only looking for silver and could be ruining other coins for people like me who actually look for doubled die and other errors. Plus it seems that some of these people searching aren't paying attention because I have found numerous 40% halves with pen marks on the side.
Here is an informal poll on the subject of marking coins........... Do you think that Fifty should be given 1,000 lashes with a wet noodle for marking coins that he has already searched without regard for other collectors who may want to keep some of the coins that he has marked? Please record your vote for one option and one option only. 1) Yes! 2) Definitely! 3) Positively! 4) Absolutely!
Yes! Absolutely! There's a whole lot I could add to this but I will be nice today in hopes that Fifty will stop that dastardly deed!!
Absolutely! Mark the roll, not the coin! I still go through the rolls because they may be looking for key dates and not varieties or errors (and my OCD won't allow me to leave a roll unsearched ).
I have never seen any of these but it is annoying that people actually do this. Do they not have respect for other collectors/roll searchers.
Ran across some that were marked with a red X when roll searching where I live. Figured they were just Silver searching. Kind of annoying since I was trying to find some for a Kennedy Dansco and some Varieties. I found a 1971 D Double Die with a Red X on it. Very Disgusted. Had Very nice Doubling spread on it. A friend of mine told me to try Acetone, It Worked Red X came right off. Don't know if it had to to with the brand of marker or what. Wonder how many other Silver searchers saw the Red X and just passed right by it with out a second thought. That was a couple of years ago. Ended up selling it to another Variety Hunter for $75.00 More than the guy who marked it could get for an entire roll of 40% Kennedy's:hail:
