I have circulated Morgans one of which appears to have no mint mark. Any idea what I have as far as the mint?
you will need to post pictures so that we accurately and properly assist you and give the best/honest answer as possible. -Shrek
Ok will do my best with the scanner, from others comments it seems to do the best at a true representation.I have used a bi ocular jewelers 10 x mag and still can't clearly make out what it appears to be , it is definitely a mint mark, it is just not shown in any of the literature I have on the mints for any time period, :bow:thanks
Thanks everyone, I do appreciate the information, will get that uploaded sometime today. :kewl: Carl Stapleton
Please take a look I revised the original listing to include the pictures. I don't know why anyone would have tried to drill a hole in the face side but it is what it is. This is the only one of 200 with this imperfection, the rest vary from 1878-1974, certainly different mints but at least 20 of them during 1921 and a large quantity pre 1946. Anyway thanks to all for you input. Happy Memorial Day to All! We've all had relatives who defended this country with their lives to preserve the freedom and our way of life. NEVER FORGET! That is unfortunate, Carl. The Morgan is an 1878 7TF Reverse of 78. No mintmark means that it was struck in Philadelphia. A large quantity of what (?) pre-1946. Do you mean silver dollars? They stopped striking Peace dollars in 1935 and didn't resume making dollar coins until the introduction of the Eisenhower dollar in 1971, but none of the Ike dollars (1971-1978) were produced in 90% silver. Chris
Thanks a million Chris, Yes I did mean Silver Dollars. I haven't gone through the entire collection yet to know how many in what years, I am beginning to catalog them as time permits. I am not familiar at all at this point with what 7TF Reverse of 78 means, pardon my ignorance. Thanks again, Carl
This link should help: Morgan Dollar Reverses 1878 was the first year the Morgan dollar was struck, there were 3 different reverse design during that year. From the 8TF reverse, to the 7TF Rev '78, to the 7TF Rev '79.
The 8 tailfeather (8TF) variety was the first reverse design for the 1878 Morgan and the top arrow feather was parallel (PAF) to the shaft. The reverse design for 1878 was eventually changed to 7 tailfeathers (7TF). Then, in 1879, the reverse was once again changed so that the top arrow feather was set at an angle to the shaft. However, some of the 1878 were struck using the 79 Reverse design, and some of the 1879S were struck using the 78 Reverse design. Chris
No, SOME of the Ike dollars from 1971 to 1976 are 40% silver. (All of the 40% silver ones come from San Francisco. All of the 71's and 72's, all the Unc 73's and 74's, and some of the proof 73's and 74's.) All of the silver dollars from 1840 to 1935 are 90% silver.
