I Was About Ready to Give up the Dime Boxes

I normally rummage through cent boxes, but I decided to try the dimes. After picking through two boxes of dimes, not a single silver dime! Not even an interesting foreign dime! So, I told the CU, "no more."

The following week, they had another box of dimes, so I took it anyway. I couldn't help myself. And...here is what I found....

Not the best of shape, but what a surprise!

Alice, WTG on the Mercs! I don't have the patients to search dimes. They're just too small and thin for me, but it sure payed off for you.

No, most of those prices are from coppercoins.com---and a couple are estimates from ebay completed auctions---

Went to Krogers lastnight to buy a pack of Monster and ended up asking for 2 rolls of pennies with the left over change... went home and looked through the 2 rolls and found nothing but 1990 and 1980's coin.... got bummed and went to grab a monster and noticed i left the spare change in the bag with the monsters and this is what i found... one 1965d dime/not silver, two pennies with the date of 1929s and 1968s all in great condition.. one of my best finds.

I know what you mean about small and thin--and so many! Searching a $250 box of dimes is tedious, only until you discover a solid silver-white rim among the sandwiches!

Don't we all ? LOL Seriously, I have not found any silver in a long long time. Maybe being in Las Vegas, the coins all get searched more ? Even a pre 1960 Jefferson is rare indeed.

    Congrats !

One Year of Searching for silver complete!

Today is the one year mark of when I discovered this thread and started actively searching for silver. Prior to reading the thread, I had no idea that silver could still be found except for an occational lucky find (it had been years since I had found one). It has become quite addicting!!!!!

My results have been excellent. I have not had an INCREDIBLE find like some have reported, but though I haven't posted the best results, I have steadily aquired much more that I thought possible when I started a year ago.

During the year I have searched 145 boxes of halves, plus an additional $5552 worth. In other words, I have searched $78,052 worth of half dollars. I have also searched approximately $1200 of Quarters, 2 boxes of nickels or $200 worth, and 4 boxes and 5 bags (a bag is four boxes of dimes) or $6,000 worth. In total, I have searched $85,452. My finds:

    • 1 War Nickel
    • 2 silver quarters
    • 31 silver dimes (including 3 found in circulation)
    • 791 total silver half dollars including
      • 628 40%ers including 3 from 1970
      • 163 90%ers including
        • 9 Walking Liberty
        • 19 Franklin
        • 135 Kennedy 1964 coins
It's been a fun and rewarding year. I hope it continues!!! :D

Wow bobbeth that is one edited collection you've gained in the last year. Very nice work. How much money do you typically have out in circulation in boxes at a time? I can only afford to do about $500 which is the cost of 1 box of halves at a time. I could probably do more if I really wanted too, but I might end up forgetting to put the money back in my accounts to pay some bills! :) Congrats on your finds!

I searched $100 Nickels and $25 Pennies this weekend. Found 2 War Nickels, gave 1 to my dad. And found probably close to 40 pre-1960 Nickels, oldest was a 1939.

Pennies were horrible. Only 8 Wheaties found.

My folks and my brother were helping me look. They were all really getting into it, :)
