I just picked up this half dime yesterday as I've been looking for nice high grade pieces for my 7070 for a while now, when this one came available at one of my local haunts I snapped it up like nobody's business. It has some nice original crust on it and some great rose and blue peripheral toning on the obv and some golden toning on th rev. I graded it around XF-40 maybe a bit higher, but it was worth every penny.
I agree with your grading. But colorful toning on an XF coin would cause me to look VERY closely. All mine are flat grey.
Oh believe you me, I looked at that very closely although I know that it came from an advanced type collector that was selling off coins to pay for some legal bills. This coin isn't the first of his to come my way I've purchased all but two of the coins he's brought in and they are all stunning, take years of looking to find kind of coins.
Then I concur with BALD SPARTAN. Congrats. Capped Bust half dimes is a set I've been pursuing for several years. Appealing design. Not a large set (16 coins in the Red Book listing). Looking to go XF or better. Got 4 to go.
Your pictures probably don't do the coin much justice, out of focus, and makes it looked cleaned. Still looks nice from the pictures though, congrats
yeah, one of these days I need to get or make a copy stand and get a light and etc etc, probably when the kids move out and I have a room to myself.
OK! Why isn't this MS or at least AU? I don't seea any sign if wear, even on the highest points. The most I see is a little shine on the higest points. Now I can understand reducing it's net because one man's toning is another man' corrosion. Of course, way to much goes into grading these days. I wish things like condition, damage, rarity, AT and value wre NOT part of the grade. I'm using a Detail/Net for my own collection and let the other stuff get rolled into the net.
Marshall, look closely, that coin does have wear. I think the majority of it, including what the coin really looks like are hidden by the pictures, which are a bit out of focus. The areas around the shield and the vertical lines of the shield itself have some wear and there are also some spots on the hair that have wear.
