Good Day All A very close friend gave me this and asked me if there is a way to know what is it so I searched the net and found out that its MARIA THERESA THALER, but there is no year or any thing. The informations that i managed to collect so far are as follow : Year : 1780 Wight : 28.668 grams Diameter : 39.5 mil meters. Silver Content : 8333.3 parts p/thousand so if any one know what this is please give me some knowledge Also ist worth something or nothing Thanks allot ....
Even undamaged the coins are only worth the silver they contain. The jewelry attached to that one is worth more than the coin.
I'd be surprised if it is even made of silver. It looks like a copy. Not all Thalers are old. Restrikes have been produced well into the 20th century. Chris
As cpm9ball says above, if authentic it is certainly a 20th century restrike, with a frozen date of 1780. MT thalers circulated widely in the Middle East and are sometimes incorporated into jewelry, as were/are coins from many other countries (silver and non-). The jewelry piece above is probably bedouin.
GDJMSP, Thank you for the reply and also the informations , i will show the coin to some one in the field and ask him about the jewelry and see what he will say
cpm9ball, Thank you for the comment, i don't know if its total 100% silver but as you can see it have 8333.3 parts p/thousand silver . Thank you,
I'm sure that this is just a typographical error, but I think you meant 833.3 parts per 1000, not 8333.3 parts per 1000 which is scientifically impossible. Chris
cpm9ball, Thank you for the correction, i don't know much about coins and it was a thing for a friend of mine.
