A half dollar is 30.6mm in diameter; a silver dollar is 38.1mm in diameter.

Many of the plaquettes vary in size. This is the smallest of the ones I have. The largest rectangular plaquette I have is about 58mm x 46mm. I also have one that has a rectangular base with an arched top which is about 90mm x 60mm overall.

Beautiful medals folks........Chris, I'm speechless.

I just love a nice penny.

 

I have been looking for one token that appeals to my whimsical side, it is a shaped like a piece of swiss cheese with the back of a cat on one side with a mouse hiding in one of the cheese holes on the other with the cat looking for it.

I have seen them on line and noted the prices for it, but have yet to see one in person at any local shop.

One of the things that got me interested in collecting French medals of the 19th century was the designers' use of allegorical figures to represent the geopolitical philosophies of the day. As an example, Marianne, has been the symbol of France for centuries much in the same way that Miss Liberty symbolized the United States. I noted that much of our 18th century coinage designs were often modeled after the works of some of the French masters.

By the way, Augustus St. Gaudens studied for 3 years at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris.
