    Searching penny rolls

My son brought some rolls of new 2009 pennies home to search. We found the one on the right in the photo. Eventhough the scans are somewhat dark, these are extremely bright and shiny and the stippling drew our eyes almost immediately to this coin.

We're very new to coin collecting and wondered if anyone has seen this effect before.

Why bother ? It's not copper and not a variety that would have a lot of value. But cleaning it might give you insight into how to do it properly. I don't think I would spend the time.

Love finding those old Canadian pennies, or is it cents (where is major when you need him) :) The oldest I have found was 1942, so cool.

    Hi,

I have the entire set and really the only semi-valuable coins in the series would be the 1973-S, 1974-S and 1976-S in 40% silver mintage. Let us know if you find any of these. There are no really rare coins in the series; they were all minted in large numbers.

Finished half boxes 3 and 4 today. Results:

    Box 3
    1-2008-D
    1-2006-D
    1-40%er

    Box 4
    1-1954 Franklin (VG condition)
    5-40%ers
1-1972-S Proof (What good is this coin now that it is circulated? And in REAL poor shape too! Can't hurt it to clean it for sure--what's the best way to clean nickel clad?)

Well, now it's wait until Thursday until my next 4 boxes get here---

I thought people refered to customer wrapped rolls as CWR; I could have sworn I saw that here. Either way.

Searched $490 of customer rolls today from my best bank. Whoever is turning them in labeled them all Kennedy's on the rolls. I need to find out who is doing it and see if they have other coins to sell. We found:

    21-40%
    1-90% (1964)

just found the forum. I have read a few posts saying their bank doesn't get halves. They can get them by boxes of $1000, they don't out of being lazy. They order dollar coins from local car washes a lot of times so they can order you a box of halves. Also if they have a coin machine, tell them you want to buy the bag off there when it is full and to give you a call. Becoming friendly with your head teller is a good idea. You wouldn't believe what people cash in.

I found a no-date buffalo nickel today. Thats about the only good find lately. Besides that, from the last $ 80, only a 1939, 40, 41, 48, and a 52-D. The rolls have been cold.

Searched 2 boxes of halves today:
    Box 1: shutout
    Box 2: 3 40%ers and one 1983 no "FG"

But, the teller also gave me a 1929 buffalo nickel. It made my day. I know that the 40% silver half dollar is more valuable than the '29 nickel, but it is so rare to fine one, that it was VERY cool. :D :) :D

    Bought $136 in halves yesterday.

    Here's what I found:

    two quarters
    two dimes
    one penny
    four car wash tokens
    one game token
one 10 peso Mexico coin (modern vintage)
one penny that visited the railroad tracks. No markings of any kind left.
one Toonie, a two dollar Canada coin
These all cost me 50 cents each.

    1 1967 P Kennedy half
    2 1968 D Kennedy halves
    2 1969 D Kennedy halves
    &
    2 1963 D Franklin halves

So, silver was 7 coins out of 255 half dollars (ignoring the junk and foreign stuff), or 2.7 % silver. This is a little above average, but not by much. Silver halves seems to generally run a little over 2 %. Of course, this is from machines, not from true "circulation," which I suspect runs much lower, probably less than half what I get in bags.

I was annoyed at the slippage (missing half dollars) and at the garbage, but still came out way ahead, and I enjoyed myself for a few minutes.

Observation: The amount of junk, foreign, and silver halves in half dollar bags seems to be increasing.

My best coin in a bag of halves is still the 1851 Large Cent that I found two weeks ago. It will probably be the best forever.

The oldest is still the old Great Britain farthing, from the early 1700's. So worn that I could barely identify it.
