Thanks for the contest and congrats to the winner. Now, for those of us who shamefully guessed and were wrong can anyone clue us in to how to tell by the reverse?
Its simply darker. Silver has a whiter tint than nickel clad.In hand you can go more in depth, Newer coins will not have that lustrous look to them. some silver can look downright holographic because its luster is top notch, silver just looks shiny. Also in hand the silver coins will not have copper showing on there reeded edge. Sound is another way of testing if its silver. Its pretty much something you will have to learn over time.
Thanks for your reply, but I understood all those points prior to guessing. My concern when picking the clad choice out where across the board the reverses take on different colors. I understand that if it's a more uncirculated example I can witness the greater luster and metalic shine of silver, but with the coloration on these halves I wasn't certain at all. Could you tell because you expected silver to tone a certain pattern as compared to the clad? Simply put, without seeing the edge or having the coins in hand, I simply guessed three.
