New kind of % poll

I was intruiged by the recent thread asking the percentage of modern (post 1964) and pre-modern (pre 1964) coins members have in their collection.

It took a little while reading through the replies to realise it was primarily directed at US coins.

How about a different kind of poll? If people post the percentages they have in their collections, regardless of whether you have only US or world coins, I will collate the data and let everyone know the result after a period of time.

I think it would be an interesting exercise and hopefully lead to an interesting exchange of opinions. So no need to post details just the percentages in the following categories you have in your collection proper.

    1. pre-1800s (including ancients).
    2. 1800-1899
    3. 1900-1964 (an arbritrary date but as good as any)
    4. 1965-present

If it's a guestimate (approximate) make it an educated one and don't just pluck figures out of the air. Feel free to make it fractional or round up/down.

My personal collection comes out at:

    1. 0.5%
    2. 1.4%
    3. 16.2%
    4. 81.9%

This came as a suprise to me. Guess I'm just a modern kind of guy.

    Hi CheetahCats

Mere quantity only. The value of your collection, for this exercise, is irrelevant. I was also aware of many collectors being reluctant to specify how many coins they have in their collection which is why I asked only for percentages. You could have 10 in your collection but still make a contribution.

    Thanks for clarifying Vic.

I think I'll refrain then, as it would be an exercise in futility . I don't see how my numbers would be relevant. I have rolls and bags and trays and boxes and albums containing secondary specimens, spanning all four of the categories, that I don't consider "primaries" in my collection.

  16. Interesting topic...I hadn't thought of it but I created a chart along those lines for my collection...I broke it out by century, but combined all ancients.

For me the largest percentage is 1900s issues, as I expected. They make up 74.25% of my collection.

The 2000s make up 20.69% of my collection.

1800s make up 4.42% of my collection.

Pre 1800s make up a palrty 0.63 % of my collection. That is the area I would most like to expand, it currently only has a few coins in my collection. (6 ancients, one 1600s, 3 1700s)

In the last week I added 12 coins from pre-1900s, so if I saw this thread last week at this time the percentage numbers for the 1800s would have been significantly lower!

My collection consists of the following:

    1. Pre-1800: 0.2%
    2. 1800 - 1899: 3.4%
    3. 1900 - 1964: 24.8%
    4. 1965 to present: 71.6%

  18. Just added three more dates to the collection on a roll search: US half 1991D, 1999P and Canada 1989 5 cents, so now my 20th Century is 74.30%.

Why didn't I think to add this chart sooner? (kind of LOL, kind of not...)
