I have a complete set of silver proof statehood quarters, and am actively working on a set of proof ASEs at the moment.

I am mainly pre-modern (1836 when they started with that steam powered coinage and hubbing the dies)

Only because my budget only allows me to collect mostly 64 on coins my collection is mainly that but it i am getting more and more pre 64 stuff. I would say it is 50/50 right now

how about making a poll with 3 categories for american coins:
    1700-1800's
    1900-1964
    1965- present

I would call mine more of an "inventory" than a collection since I am unable to afford the coins I'd really like to "collect".

    Pre-1959 US Cents = 75%
    Pre-1900 South American Coinage = 25%

If you go by sheer numbers then post 64, if you go by net worth then pre 64. I have pulled maybe 200 2009 lincolns, but I only have a few dozen bust halves as an example.

It was my intention to do something like that when I started this thread but for some blasted reason the poll option didn't kick in so I had to run it this way.....:goofer:

Primarily pre-64. But I have mint and proof sets from in the 50's up to date. Out of 29 pages on omnicoin 21 are pre-64. But I only took pictures of a few proof or mint sets.

If it is older than me (post-Walker half dollars), its not for me.

1964 and before is where my money goes now.
    100% of it.
In fact anything post-1964 is in the process of being sold off.
All my proof ASE's are gone.
My regular ASE's are currently listed for auction.
If I can find my proof sets and mint sets, everything after 1964 will go.
That would leave me with only P-D state quarters; they'll probably stay.

Actually except for the early commemoratives I don't actively collect 20th century coins.
I have upgraded a few but my big push now is a set if IHC's, and I have all the 1900's ones.

Most of my post-64 stuff is for type collection purposes. I don't like proofs, so I generally try to find visually-attractive (and honestly, on the newer stuff, I think high-grade MS is visually UNattractive...) specimens and hang on to them. I keep all pre-1982 pennies, as well as all nickels, but obviously not for numismatic value.

Anyway, I'm a pre-64 guy, and especially a lover of pre-Barber stuff. I like tokens, colonials, etc, too. I'm starting to see the attraction of early 20th century silver, as well...

But those creepy Jefferson-looking-at-you nickels or the four-or-five-designs-a-year series they keep putting out? No thanks!

Hey, to each his own eh Dingo? Up till now I've remained silent as to the makeup of my collection, but most folks here know me as a "modern" guy. :smile I'd say that 90% of my collection consists of post-64 stuff. I'm heavy into modern proof issues and silver eagles. I enjoy collecting all of the mint and proof issues although I've got proof sets that go back to '54. I'm recently becoming acquainted with the more "classical" commem's....

Absolutely! And I've found that one's own tastes and interests can change a lot over time, and that can be a good thing unto itself.

I would have to say my collection reflects an 80 20 balance in favor of pre 64 us coinage. But, i do have some other stuff i really enjoy, like sms, 70's era proofs, as well as some world coins. I even have a magicians palming token circa 1899. But most of my resources are aimed at pre 64 stuff.

I try to collect as much pre 64 as I can but managing an income with 3 teenagers at home routes me down the road to more accesable and budget easy modern coins. But I always pick up the pre 64 coins when the budget and opurtunity presents itself.

    I have different break points.

    1793 Chains and Wreaths
    1793-1796 Caps
    1796-1807 Busts
    1808-1814 Classics
    1816-1839 Middle Dates
everything else (actually an accumulation rather than a collection)
