A few weeks ago I found a 1970 S cent in a circulated roll and was very excited for a minute to think that I might have found a small date. Well, it wasn't. So, I found myself in a coin shop today and saw this coin for sale for $0.25 Did I find it this time? What is this coin worth?
yes it;s a small date, great find! www.lincolncentresource.com is a god send..learn alot from this site or you can use www.coppercoins.com
I would like a larger date photo to be sure, but it appears to be a large date. I can't see the inside of the 9 well, but I think I see the crease between the horizontal and vertical part of the 7.
if that is true, then you have better eyes then I. Look at the word Liberty, it appears to be worn/faded as all 70s small dates. Also if you look at the hook of the number 9 it has the same shape as a small date http://www.lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1970Ssmalldate.html If I am wrong I will apologize however i hope I am right this time Try blowing up you picture and posting it on photobucket.com and try to enlarge the date and the word liberty. -Shrek
Looks like a small date to me, if so it's worth $65 in MS65, see http://www.lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1970Ssmalldate.html as linked before. the inner point of the 9 points at the MM on the large date, and at the 7 on the small date
That is a small date. Look at the hook on the 9 and the height of the tail on the 7. Just guessing, but that should be somewhere around a 63. Numismedia says that goes for $30. However, there are enough of those around in better condition, I think you would be lucky to get that much for it.
:hammer:I do have both in 1970s proof set on Ebay for sale in One Lot Item#110534611874 One is Large Date second is small date. So it's easy to tell if you compare both smalldate and large date.Smalldate is High 7 Large date is Low 7 from the Mintmark.
Attachment of the Photograph of 1970s Proof Set Small date as High 7 and Large Date as Low 7 close to the Mintmark. Item no.110534611874 On E bay Please see it! 2 proof Set of 1970s Small Date and Large date. I think the photograph will be nice to compare which is which the Small date and large date. Thank You.
yes but that is not the only give a way on comparing the two.. You have to remember the word Liberty, the Hook of the number 9 and I believe there is one more that off the top of my head I can't think of it. -Shrek
Please don't start with the position of the mintmark. The MM was hand punched back then. The 7 can be near or far (high or low?) for both types. What counts is where the top of the seven is relative to the rest of the date. The tail of the 7 is also noticeably higher or shorter on the small date. If you want to see the small date discussed to death, try reading http://www.cointalk.com/t93080/
Ok..I've been reading this with interest because the jar of pennies that I found at a flea market has thirteen various 1970 pennies in it, with Five of those being the 1970-S..... According to my very untrained eye, it looks like 3 of them are the small date...but hey, I'm probably legally blind in 6 or more states. I'll try and take some pictures, and try and get them posted up in a separate thread. The mason jar also contains pennies from 1940 up until 1983, with the majority of them from the 1960's. (One 1982 penny looks like it was either hit with a broad center-punch, or shot with a .22). Ok...being really new to this, what dates should I be aware of? I already know about the 1955 double, but there were none in the jar. Thank you in advance, and sorry for the hijack.
One of my favorites to search are the 56-D's. RPM1 is visible to the naked eye, if you have good eyes of course. There is also a variety that has 2 completely separated D's, and a 56-D with a faint "S" between the 1 & 9. The Lincoln Cent Resourse is a very good place for all this info. Have fun...
