I was wondering how many collectors here on CT collect coins from the classic era as opposed to the more modern day stuff. Feel free to voice you choice.....:smile

I tend to prefer modern day inflation money, specifically banknotes, but I also collect pre-worldwar II banknotes from over here in Europe

    What about you? :smile

I collect both. Far more of my resources go into pre-64 coins, however.

What? I have to chose one? Surely not! I would like to think my collection is balanced. Mercs, Franklins, Rosies, Sacs, and Prezs. I have several dozens of random coins I've also collected like Buffaloes, Lincoln cents, etc. but they aren't in any album or sequential series or grade like the previous mentioned collections.

Having completed collecting the entire 20th century copper and silver circulating coinage, all 1401 of them, I am now working on a complete US type set (the 95 type coins listed in the Red Book). What I need are the 18th century coinage ($$-ouch). So yes, I definitely would say that I prefer the classic  coins.

Okay, let me qualify this a bit. I initially was trying to start a poll, but it just didn't turn out and so here is the thread without any options (gonna have to polish up on my poll posting skills).

This thread is somewhat in response to a collectors post on another thread who stated (parphrasing here) that there were more collectors out there who collected pre-64 stuff than there were who collected post-64 (modern) stuff. Got me to thinkin' a bit. I thought his response of drawing a line between the two so called era's was a little extreme. I think that many of us here collect in both era's so lets ask this question. Given the two era's, which one do you concentrate on the most?

    Maintain some each

    I Maintain some of each.

But I never spend my pre 64's.

The later stuff is susceptible to playing with for awhile or just spending/giving/losing.

I suppose I collect both, but at least 99% of my collection is pre- 64. In fact, I'd say more than 80% of it is pre- 1900.

Interesting question: I imagine it splits by # of years collecting, as well as age. Older, more experienced collectors going for Pre 64 (even pre WW1), while the younger ones going for the more modern stuff. :hail:

Personally, I would say pre 64, as the main 2 items I am working on now are a circulated Peace set as well as pre64 Roosies from circulation set (even just to see if it still can be done).

However, much of my collection is made of modern comm. (plus a set of Kennedy halves), and I am still working on a full modern comm. set.

    rough guesstimate:

    92% pre- 64
    7% post- 64
    1% other: ancient/world/pre-1900 US

You really think the numbers are that high Chris (pre-64)?

    Pre '64?
Do you mean 1764, or 1864, or 1964?

I ask because generally any coins post 16-17th century are considered modern - at least in world numismatics. For U.S numismatics it is likely different.

That's enough to make me squirt a little milk out of my nose.

I guess the modern equivalent is ROFLMAO.:goofer:

I have almost completely cleared my main collection of post 64 items. I have also purged almost all post 1909 items. A few buff's and maybe 1 wheat cent remain. I am not including my harris or whitman albums. I would say 99% is pre-1910.

Shoot! I meant in my own collection, that is roughly my breakdown. Sorry, I should have said I was offering my personal collection to give you a sense from just one more collector.

Also the reason I'm so low on post-64 is that I too have cleared out nearly all of my collection of silver modern commems, mint sets, proof sets (clad and silver). I currently only collect silver Ikes, ASEs, AGEs, AGBs in the PM composition coins typically, but also have some random other modern US: cents, nickels, halves for instance. I don't try to acquire every issue from the Mint anymore as you may know from other discussions we've had on the topic of storage, bulk and focussing ones collection.
