Is everyone disappointed in the professional graders slapping a 70 on everything? Or does everyone believe that the quality of that many coins has actually reached perfection? The question is...should the professional grading companies continue giving these gradings of MS70 to all these coins, or raise their standards? VOTE ABOVE!
Check out ebay and type in MS 70. You will find so many, that you will realize how unspecial an MS 70 actually is now. All these modern coins (around the last half-decade or so) are being graded MS70. It will not be long before MS-65 is inferior at this rate.
For example...look at the ad on the side of your screen. I am guessing it is advertising an MS-70 coin. If not, press refresh.
If you get right down to it , there is no perfect coin , but on the Modern collector coins the US Mint has it down to as good as it can get . I've looked at a few of my modern commemeratives and darn you really have to look hard to find any flaws , and sometimes I don't see any . Would I pay extra because a coin is marked MS-70 , Heck no . rzage
It is good to have your opinion, but it seems that you are on the fence. If you cannot have it both ways, which would you choose? Poll is at the top.
Big, big difference between PR70(which that Ebay listing is) and MS70. The only service I've seen slapping MS70 on everything is International Numismatics Bureau.
didnt realize it was a proof set. but i mean moreso in terms of business strike coins reaching MS70 commonly. There is no struggle to obtain one that was minted in the last 5 years.
No! It's not "either way". There is a big difference. The Mint has really made strides in improving the proof program, and PF70 coins are not as hard to come by any more. Also, you didn't specify whether the MS70 coins that you say are everywhere on eBay are business strikes or satin finish coins. Again, there is a big difference. Since 2005, all of the Mint Sets are produced with the satin finish. The coins are not produced like ordinary business strikes, nor are they handled like ordinary business strikes. They are produced and processed in a way much similar to the proof coins, and as a result, 70's are turned out with much more regularity than ever before in the history of Mint Sets. If you search eBay for MS70 Business Strikes, I will be surprised if you find any at all. Chris
I'm not voting in this poll because the choices are too vague and the results will not be accurate. Chris
What more specifics do you need? It is a basic, simple question... Of those coins which are graded MS-70, do you believe that they deserve that grading? It is just looking for an overall opinion. Of course the answer will not be the same for every single MS-70.
I agree, and as you explained there are big differences. Even with the modern mint, MS70 business strikes are hard to come by. You may find a lot of "perfect" coins listed on Ebay, but those are self-slabbers. You'll not find the major TPG's handing out 70s on business strikes very often.
This is specifically for professional grading services such as PCGS and NCG. Self-slabbers or 3rd world graders are not included in this poll.
Do the coins deserve to be graded MS70? This question is so vague that it is like asking how many asteroids are in the asteroid belt. Chris
ah yes i see what you are saying. i probably should have been more specific in the actually poll question. my fault. there are more details in the first post
I voted no, I don't think theres such a thing as a perfect coin. I think these grading companies are slapping 70's on these moderns because of the market, there's a demand for them and they make lots of money giving out 70's. I collect modern commems and ASE's but I have no desire to have them slabbed. I like keeping them in their original mint packaging which in my opinion is a much more attractive way to display them and in the future they will keep their value more so than the slabbed ones. I think that 50 years from now people will look back and think we were being silly with all these 70's. There's just too many of them.
