From the PCGS website: "the PCGS Secure Plus system digitally captures the unique "fingerprint" of each coin, and enters it into a permanent data base. Neither the coin's appearance nor its grade can be changed without flagging the system." From How to Tell A Fake Gold Coin http://investletters.com/blog/how-to-tell-a-fake-gold-coin/ "With modern 3-D laser imaging, a die can be created that mimics the real thing in perfect detail." Let's just hope that PCGS has good security for the the laser/digital images. If they fall into the wrong hands, they could be a tool for counterfeiting. I have even heard some extreme collectors/dealers express concern that the new PCGS program could be a guise for a conspiracy to "clone" high value rare coins! What say thee?
Fall into the wrong hand? They have been selling those machines at the big shows for years so it would just take a few dollars to own one yourself...
Cool - I will get one. Anybody have an 1804 dollar I can borrow? I only need to make one or two of those puppie.
Personally, I think the risk is far to large for a publically traded company to assume. Their integrity is in their product and "authenticating coins" is part of that product. I have absolutely no doubts that security on their laser imaging database is as tight as money can afford. Their company and reputation as a top grading company is dependent upon it. To impy or infer otherwise is just paranoid folly shared by "extremely paranoid" dealers and collectors over hot dogs and beer.
