okay everybody the $3 1854-D gold coin came back today and now all I have to do is hand it over to my friend. I have to wait cause he's out of town until Monday. Here are some photos I took with my son's Canon PowerShot S3 IS camera:

I searched the Heritage archives for the last one they sold in this exact same grade and service, AU55 NGC. The last one sold in 2004 for -- are you sitting down? -- $31,050.

The last AU55 PCGS piece, a couple of years ago, brought $51,750.

More excitement is in store for you and your friend!

Hey, thanks guys. Last one of NGC AU55 1854-D $3 dollar gold coin sold in 2004? Oh well, oh well, oh well. I wonder what it might go for nowadays? It gives me that " Good ole' Feelin " for my friend.
I don't think my friend is really going to sell it, or at least anytime soon. If he wants to I'd be very surprised. He is very laid back about this as compared to me. I will certainly let him know that he is " Sitting In The Cat Bird's Seat " as far as negociating a deal of any kind.

You probably did tell them $30K, but the Post Office will not pay out more than $25K. They will take the extra insurance fee for the higher amount, but the receipt and the most they would have paid if it had disappeared would have been $25K.

That's messed up. Why wouldn't their insurance cover losses above $25k? With that knowledge, I'd have probably paid a good friend to hand-deliver it to them.

IIRC, the max insurance that the PO provides is $25k, no matter what you put on the form.

That's just the way it is. With Registered the maximum amount the Post office will pay on a claim is $25K no matter how much it is insured for. And that is the highest payout the Post office will make. For other forms of insured mail the maximum amount they will pay out is $5K.

    welcome to coin talk,

I believe all us gold coinage was 22 carat. Usually tho it is expressed as being 90% gold.

22 karat would be 91.7% gold. US Gold coins are .900 fine correct?

Lots of experts to help you determine authenticity. Post a pic, but I suggest that you start a new thread.

    Welcome as well.....:)

I just came onto this thread... that is a GORGEOUS '54-D $3. I would never soak any one of the three in any bath... let 'em keep that original skin... there are so few D, C, & O mint coins that still have that kind of character. Seasoned collectors will pay a handsome premium for unmolested coins like that.

    congrats on a storybook find...

Thanks, I'm still pinching myself. What a priviledge it was to work with these coins. Got the goose bumps again. It's a memory I'll have forever.
