Those are looking great! Darkhorse did you read that post about cracking out for the album. I just want you to be informed about it.
That image of a page from your type set is GORGEOUS! Keep those images coming. They are cool to look at. i never saw that cool eagle on the reverse of that one coin what coin is that again?
It's the 1984 Olympics commemorative. It's probably one of the most affordable modern US commems. Yep, I saw. I think my expectations are realistic.
i just thought of a solution to this "to crack or not to crack" issue. Why not scan in the dansco album pages and post images of the scans to a web site. Then you could scan (image) the coins (either in the slab or raw) ... then cut out just the image of the coin (using any graphics package) and drop the round images into the album scan ... you could even have each coin image in the album clickable so if you click on the coin image ... it will flip and show the reverse. This flip capability could be sort of like what i did here for currency where you can easily flip the bills and see the back ... http://mindstar.com/currency At that point you would have a beautiful online album of your type collection ... allowing you to easily share with others around the world You probably could even customize the online "album" adding new slots for new types as they are produced (images are easy to edit and text is easy to add!) You can then put the rare coins in your safe deposit box (where they belong!) and keep the rare ones in their slabs. Darkhorse, if you want to email me a scan of that one page of your album you posted (a straight on view as large and clear as possible) ... one for the front and one for the back ... i would gladly (for free) reformat the images and post it to a web site to show you what i mean ... you could then download all the images and web site html that i made, for your own use (posting and modifying as you see fit) ... i think that would be a really cool project. My email address is paul@mindstar.com if your interested. If not, or if you want to try doing that yourself, no worries.
Hi phubanks, that won't really be necessary. I'm pretty proficient in photoshop and coin photography to do that sort of thing. I'm really most interested in having the album as an object for myself, really.
Beautiful coins. I haven't got the type set folder yet, but after going through this thread Im definitely going to be buying either the 7070 or the IS folder tonight ! Keep us posted on your progress
My IS type album arrived today. One of the screws was stuck in one of the removable pins so hard that the screw ended up breaking off inside the pin before turning out of it. Now I have to track down a new one. Not a good start. They should have been much better quality IMO. Maybe I can find some betters ones.
Just got my Intercept shield album last night. They sent me two duplicate pages (the modern coins, and the page with the small and large cents). I look forward to years of filling this album up.
My IS album came in the other night. Also came with the duplicate pages and I got the gold page as well. Can't wait to start filling it up. Will be heading to the local coin shop tomorrow for my first purchases. Not sure what I want to do about the clad moderns. I have an 84 proof set for my birth year that I could crack open to use. Also might swing by the Philly mint next week, so I could see what they have in the gift shop to use. A bunch of 2010s might be interesting for the album, as in "the year I started the set".
I'll cracking open one of my 1982 proof sets to fill some spots of my moderns. Im also trying to use as many birthyears of my family as possible. Just going down my paternal line, thats a majority of the dates. I'll need to some more investigating to get my maternal line birthyears to hopefully fill some gaps. I figure this will make the type set mean a little more to me
For the earlier years (when appropriate), I use coins 100 years older than my family's birth years. Some of the older proof coins (e.g., a 1888 proof 5¢) can look spectacular and won't set you back four figures.
Hi All, Here's a not-so-exciting update of how my Type Set is going. I got bored today and went to a coin shop to fill in a couple of holes. Not much on the first page. The 1905 cent is new, it's very brown and semi lustrous with nice details. Page 2 is pretty pathetic. It's sad, really. Page 3 is shaping up to be my very favorite though. All various circ grades, with the years of tarnish sort of augmenting their designs. On Page 4 I added a Bay Bridge (an under-appreciated commem as far as I'm concerned. I love the art deco design), an 1898 dollar, and I plugged in a clad commem in the Kennedy commem hole. Why? Why not? For the older dollars, I think I'll include some unusual coins - a holed seated dollar maybe, a very VERY worn motto, and maybe a trade with lots of chops (maybe I'll put in a high quality counterfeit - HA!). Last page is unchanged, but I think I'll swap out the BU Sac with a proof '10. I may fill up some easy holes at the Long Beach show, but other than that I think I'll take a little break from this for the time being. I have a Canadian Colonial token en route to me.
Nice ... i love seeing dansco type pages filled in. getting all the coins will be quite an accomplishment. keep up the good work!
The one problem for the third page I see occurring is that it'll be difficult to find a clad coin with the same antique finish as all the others will have.
Great looking sets guys. I like how everyone uses a different approach in their sets. I always wanted to start one of these and still cannot bring myself to do it. I wouldn't buy anything high value or even mid value for that matter to put in it. Eventually, I'll bring myself to it. However, shouldn't the album include the bi-metallic commem?
Can I ask the experts that have these albums on what the TOTAL COST would be to finish if it contains CIRCULATED for the older coins? I really am interested in starting one of these albums, as a new collector, but don't have the $30-40K discussed in the other thread on this topic. Military guy, so obviously would never be able to spend that kind of money.
It's all up to you with what you want to put in it. You said Circ's but there is still a huge difference between AU's, Toned, Key Dates, Commons, Holed, a 7070 with the Gold page...ect. It can be very cheap if you make it that way.
You could probably finish the album for somewhere in the neighborhood of $2,500 to $3,000 tops if you don't include a gold page and keep to Good to Fine coins for the early pieces.
That is a beautiful album and some great photos! I have vacillated on building this set, because I already have a completed Capital 20th century set in Ch. XF and up and really want to leave those coins in that frame. I've been leaning towards simply completing a Capital 19th century set, because it would be a complement to the 20th century set and pretty much includes all the same major designs, save for the Seated Liberty varieties (though even Dansco doesn't include all the S.L varieties).
