And I had mistakenly thought that this equestrian had expired. The vast majority of numismatists and glossaries using the terms synonymously, not to mention usage by general population. Go figure ?

We all know what you mean, and as pointed out you are correct, although a touch pedantic.

As to the teasing you are taking, it is in reference to equating inexperience and lack of knowledge with the use of the word penny. It is a bit of a stretch to assume anyone who uses the word penny for a U.S. cent can not also be knowledgeable about U.S. coins.

This is equivalent to calling a no name brand tissue a Kleenex. You would get the same response if you refused to hand the person a tissue because technically your tissue is not a Kleenex...

    Charmy,
As always, you have once again shown an awesome example of pennies in your collection. :thumb:
Even though you must be a novice, since that is what you have been called, I have learned so much from your post on this forum and others and by your website. Your bio on the website is inspiring.
If you are a novice, what does that make me? :D
I wish some people would just learn to pick there battles. Life is to short to always be arguing over trivial stuff. This was definately not a good place to attack you Charmy. It was about to get ugly before Doc came along.:pencil:

Right Folks all have now had there say, if any one wishes to discuss the merits of different coin names and there useage then by all means start a thread but keep this one to what it started out as which is a appreciation of the lovely coins that have been displayed and not a argument.

It's always officially been the cent and always unofficially called the penny for the copper in use at the time as well. No big deal. No one calls it the Interstate Highway and Defense Network, though that is the official designation for our highway system.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet...

Whatever. The fact is that the US never coined a penny since the mint was established. Use of the term "penny" for US coinage is a misnomer in my opinion, Yes, I am a purist and a stickler for accuracy.

To get this thread back on track and away from the argument that Mr. Purist Stickler won't let go of, here are some pretty Lincoln pennies I also recently acquired for my personal collection....

I bought this one because it is just plain pretty

Though it's hard to see in the photo, this zinc penny has beautiful blue violet toning (the scratches are on the holder)

This 1917-S has a defective planchet - see the left size of the reverse where the planchet is actually split, as well as the numerous die cracks

This one is very pretty in hand

I had another violet toned 1972/72 in my collection, but I liked this one better

Very nice pennies. It is not too often that you see a steelie toned.

I like the 44 the most. Great color.
At the same time, the cracks on the 17 make it a special coin as well.
