Im needing some help identifying this coin. I can't read arabic so Im kind of at a loss. Just wondering what this coin is and what year it is. If also like to determine the metal content, but of course that'd be easier if I knew what to look up! Thanks in advance -Andy
Dates and legends, especially in unfamiliar scripts are SO much easier to read in proper orientation. After I printed your images and turned the paper 90º to the right, the 1303AH (1886CE) to the left of the bust and the 1307AH (1890CE) below the bust became legible. Those dates put your Persian (now Iranian) coin in the reign of Nasi al-Din Shah, and the lion with a sword reverse is common to quite a few coins of that period. However, I have not found the right-facing bust in my 3rd Ed. 19th Century Standard Catalog of World Coins. What are the dimensions, and apparent metallic composition?
Okay, my date conversion comes from page 14 of the 2008 35th Ed. 20th Century volume of the SCWC, which says 1307AH began on August 28, 1889, and ended on August 17, 1890. It also says July 1, 1927-June 19, 1928 was 1346AH, and June 20, 1928-June 9, 1929 was 1347AH. UPDATE: After acanthite changed the calendar from his originally posted AH (which is the one I was using) to the correct SH, the date conversion works, and the coin is in fact as he described. (Looking in the wrong book certainly explains my inability to find it!) I had forgotten that the Iranians didn't always use the standard Muslim calendar.
Yes, I typed it wrong originally. In fact, the muslim year was being used up until SH 1304, so its a bit confusing.
