Guys, I know you are getting tired of seeing my junk coins, but I found 3 more today that look "funny". My questions are; 1945 S Merc----Is that "S" upside down or something ? Next, is the 1930 S Buffalo on the left considered a 2 feather ? The feather is there, but it's really weak. And last for today, does the S on the 1936 Buffalo look like a RPM ? I believe I am seeing an image directly to the south. I get my eyes checked again next month. Thank you.
1 merc dime. There is a possibility of an "inverted" mint mark, would have to look it up & compare. Not sure off hand,if any are known to date 2 buffalo. no feather has to be completely gone.hence "2 feather" half of it would be 2 1/2 feather 3 rpm buff.It does appear there is a S to the south
Thanks Mad. The dime looked different than any of the half roll of 45 S Mercs, but it looked better turned around. I was looking for the micro of course, And the Buffalo feather was very dim by eye, but came out nicely under the scan. Wow the S may be a real error ? Cool ! Thanks. Next week I may tackle the IHC's. And was the 2 1/2 feather a joke ? Or is that a real variety ? This is all pretty new to me. The only "Cherrypicks" we were aware of over the years were the 1942 over 1 and the 1913 D Buff. LOL
RPM would be a variety not an error. An error happens during the strike. A variety happens during the die making process...
Sorry, just didn't see a "Variety" forum, I thought this was the best place to start the thread ? Maybe Coin Chat would have been better ? I am not only learning about the coins, but still learning the rules. Thanks
Thanks Bullion, But I am still waiting for stuff to try and build a camera rig. As with the 1964 Washington I posted, Mad was kind enough to point out that it was very likely machine doubling, but better pics were needed. I understand better now how critical the small details are. But high resolution scans are all I can do for now. It is amazing how a slight tilt may reveal detail so clearly that just doesn't get picked up on a scan ? Appreciate you taking the time, thanks
Actually, mpc, these did come from change. Not in the last 4 decades though. These were in a coffee can of junk coins left by my Mom that I finally got up to sorting out. along with coins I quit adding to in 1981. We didn't even know how many v arieties there were back then. I think the only things we looked for were the 1942/1 Mercury and the 3 legged Buffalo. I still have a coffee can or two or three to go through. But I am very elated with what has turned up so far ! Hopefully, there will be something more ?
Thanks so much abe. I am learnig a bit more about it every day. I should have said varieties, because they are not, as you said errors. I am still unsure though whether machine doubling is a variety or an error ? I am getting really antsy about a photo rig though. These coffee cans are turning up some interesting finds. I am wondering if Mom tossed every coin that looked funny aside ? I know she had to make change from some coins though. Thanks for all your help
that S is right side up. i know it is a penny link but you can see the difference on it. http://www.lincolncentresource.com/Featured/1946Sinverted.html
Thanks, I'll check it out. I was looking at about 1/2 roll of the 1945 s when this one jumped out at me. It is different somehow than the others. But I had a serious hard drive loss today and am on a borrowed computer for a few days. Thanks
