I got this seated dime not too long ago. Fell in love with the gold toning *doesnt display well in pics*. It isnt PVC. Its in a Coin World slab so thats why the white around it is weird Also shot accidently in ISO 400 on the camera so there is some noise.
The coin was improperly dipped some time in its past, which caused the spottiness on the obverse and the gold toning. The details are nice though, and with some proper care and time in an album or envelope or something, that coin could be nice.
That's probably a great looking dime. If you get the chance, pop it out and shoot it raw. Would love to see it. Cleaned for sure but can't say much more from the image.
I admit the pics blow for this particular coin I posted today. I dont like touching it but I can try raw for it.
With the pics being like they are it is hard to see how the coin is struck but from what I can tell it is a very nice looking coin
Raw pics hopefully better. In hand you dont see those spots as much. I used "Super Macro" on my camera.
It appears to be an AU that has been dipped and what you are now seeing is secondary toning after the dip or the result of improper rinsing that has allowed the residual dip to begin to etch the coin.
I guess it was PVC. Either that or some tape residue of some sort. Regardless, I would imagine that the surfaces are better off for having had this removed.
Much better mat. The coin has still been dipped, but at least its not all splotchy and ugly. My recommendation would be - find an old paper 2x2 envelope, put this coin in it, put it in a dark place, and leave it there for 5 or 6 years. Hopefully some color and life will be restored to the piece.
with a bunch of other coins wrapped around it for pressure, which will create some natural heat, and accellerate the toning prosess.
thanks for the replies. Im a bit disappointed it came out as a dipped coin but not much I can do about it. Will try the toning tips.
