yes reminds me of those indian coins. coudnt you have made this post 3 years earlier. i still wuld have a few $ int he pocket but we did make out like bandits on the US
I understand what you're trying to say, but it doesn't work that way. With coins that are not popular it's a whole harder to influence the market than it is with coins that are popular. If what you are saying was true, any unpopular coin could be made very expensive in a short amount of time by just a few people collecting them. But they aren't. In fact it is very rare that it ever happens. The dust has not settled, they are still climbing in price.
And you shouldn't stop!! Think about Cline and his collecting SLQ's. He writes a book and helps bring the market up. But he has a nice inventory of what he loves and their prices rise is a good think. The only down fall is that his newps are gonna cost more but there's more fellow collectors to share his love. Enjoy the the ride
Shawn, I don't know if I ever thanked you for your support in that thread, but just in case, THANK YOU! My favorite threads are those that are so chock full of great information and opinions that you can bookmark them and refer to them later. I must say that I was very skeptical about my forum activities having an appreciable effect on the rainbow toned coin market. That was until two things happened yesterday. First, you made this post which presents a very compelling argument. Second, I found this thread on the PCGS forum yesterday and can't help thinking maybe the OP had read my thread a while back. Super slider AU58's ...post some AU64's Now I did not coin the term AU64, but I have heard it used more often since I wrote that thread. Is it coincidence or something more? Anyway, it has never been my intention to affect market conditions, I just really enjoy discussing and viewing high grade Jefferson Nickels and rainbow toned coins. But the possibility that Doug is right and I am becoming a victim of my own advertising is dawning on me. It ain't gonna stop me from talking about my nickels though!
Okay, this is starting to really get a little scary. Please read this thread on the NGC forum. Do you think this coin deserves a STAR! Did someone really bid $488 because that is what I said the coin was worth or is it a coincidence?
I never truly understood or appreciated the fancy of toned coins until I read your posts. So much appeal and magic. Coincidentally the toned market for dollars and now nickels and dimes took off. I attribute the nickels to you, I never saw a monster toned nickel before this forum and now I happily own 6 monster towned full step nickels. From 1960-1964. I also bid on this auction but I figured 3x pcgs. Damn this auction really blew up. At least u have a corner on the market
Lehigh96 does quite a bit to educate folks regarding toned coins, but this market absolutely exploded in the late 1990s and that includes all US denominations. Likely reasons include the advent of high quality digital photography that allowed the sharing of images and the ubiquitous nature of the web that allowed these shared images to be hosted at all times for all to view.
Well, I just checked the final price and it does seem a bit extremem. I like the obverse and assume that the bidders believed it was still market acceptable. In other words, the coin woluld still grade -- PCGS is so tough on toned coins these days that is not always the case (I'm speaking from experience with Buffalo's but I assume they're tough on toned Jeffs as well). Look at it this way, Paul, the value of your collection just went up!
Well it could very well be someone read it and bid it based off that. I do know on this auction I made heritage a lot of money - without winning, but maybe one coin. I though my initial bids would hold up on a couple of coins - but no way. I even went back and bid on a couple I wanted - no dice. I might have won one coin - not sure yet. And if I read it correctly the next bid would have bested mine. I bid on 12 different coins. Sigh.
It's true the market was created back then, however i feel in the past two years prices are rising out of control. I sold a monster toned 64D for a ridiculous amount of money, it's ten times what it should have sold if I tried a year ago
