My bet is no. In fact, I bet that there will be nothing but mint state and proof dollars. Sacs only circulated for a couple years before the mint pulled the circulation plug. Prez dollars are being hoarded like crazy. So, my guess is no. In fact I'll boldly come out and say you'll never see an XF Sac dollar and moreso, grading companies will never grade a prez dollar below AU. Ok, maybe "never" is too definate a word, but I bet it will take a good darn while before they do. Sort of sad in a way. We know how Morgans, Peace, and Ikes wear down through the years. Something just tells me we won't be able to see this sort of wear in a Sac or Prez dollar anytime soon. Almost tempted to have a couple pocket pieces. Photo graph them each week and maybe after a year or two have something no one else has...a worn modern dollar.
You are probably correct unless the dollar coins start to get used more frequently in commerce (subways, parking meters, vending machines, etc.). The pocket piece idea is a interesting one; you can be the only person with a low ball registry set. TC
How often do you see a 1931-S lincoln cent in good condition? This is probably how most of the dollars will end up...
I have a couple Sac's in XF condition in my collection. I got them out of the coin machine at work. Of course, I save all coins that I get in circulation. I get so few Sac's that I save them in whatever condition.
i got this from my bank here in NY, i suspect it might of come from Ecuador ? but that is a guess or at least i like to think so but i ended up spending it at the self-serv checkout at Walmart
There we go! You see, I think that is cool. We see so many perfect proof or uncirculated examples that we loose focus in what a nice circulated coin looks like after it serves it purpose. That one seems to fit the bill...even though it is a coin that was made for circulation as opposed to 2003 I think and onward. I sort of guessed the areas of wear based on high points and fine details, but it is always nice to see an actual photo. Still curious as to how the new NA dollars (stupid name) and Prez dollars will look though. Thanks for posting. In the future I think it would be cool to do a progression with a coin. Get a coin of a certain date and mintmark in all grades to gain a general feel of the progression of wear.
Since no one wants to use them, they will always look new and will be still new in a million years. The government full wells know this and continues to make them since that gives them something to do with our tax money. Make something that will never be used so they can make more and more and more. Of course no one wanted the Edsel when they were new and now worth many, many times what they were worth new.
Wouldn't it be cool to follow a micro chipped coin over the generations and grade the same coin every year or so?
I get dollar coins back as change when parking at a few of the hospitals here in town. I'd say about 1 in 20 are pretty well worn. I've seen some pretty well "used" presidential dollars already.
I don't see too many worn dollar coins, but I know they exist. A lot of cities use parking meters that accept them and considering some places charge 10 minutes for a dollar, I'm sure a lot get used, unless people carry around a box of quarters all the time. Guy~
The tellers in two banks I frequent know I'm a collector. They keep aside "unusual" [their term] coins that I may be interested in. The tellers really participate after you make it a point to tell their boss how well they are representing the bank.....great for customer relations. I love it the way a few words of appreciation makes everybody beam. Anyway, in not wanting to disappoint anyone, I buy whatever they have put aside for me weather I want it or not, and with a hearty thanks. The only ones that I care to examine are the SBA's. I'm willing to keep searching in the belief that I will one day stumble upon those having a clear S. The circulated Sacs and Prez coins mostly have developed a "patina" that is an ugly, lusterless, dingy brown color, having absolutely no eye appeal, whatsoever. I take them to Mc BloodSludge or Burger Slob whenever I hanker for a life-shortening breakfast. When I plunk these coins on the counter, the expression of confusion on the faces of the spiked-hair, snot-ring wearing teenagers is priceless. They have to call for the store manager for permission to accept these coins before they hand me my great tasting, grease-dripping bag. One of these days the Good Lord is going to punish me severely. Back to the point..... after being in circulation for only a short period, these coins become so ugly it's rather difficult to believe that they will ever acquire collector value. I can't get rid of my ugly ones fast enough.
i have never seen a prez coin in real life... definitely not in change. wonder if i go to the bank if they will have them for sale...
...the buck coins should be used everywhere since NOTHING costs a quarter anymore! actually any machine that takes coins would be a great place to use the dollar coin. the products for sale in the dispensing machines USED to cost a quarter (and are really still worth a quarter) now cost a buck anyway!
I wonder if the government takes the look of a coin after circulation into consideration when they design the coins? Probably not. Still, your comment makes me wonder: surely the mint takes into consideration collectors...in fact, I'm sure they do because they still mint the Sacs even when they don't circulate. If that's the case, wouldn't they want to create a coin that looks at least somewhat decent when circulated to enhance collector intrest? Maybe I'm overthinking the issue, but still sort of bums me out that I don't see any circulated dollars.
