Are you talking about keeping them in your personal collection vs. putting them back into circulation, or keeping them personally vs. selling them as wheats?

Only if you have enough room to store them all.

Wheat cents are still available by the millions and $50 bags of 5,000 coins can usually be purchased rather easily.

They are getting more difficult to find in common change though because folks are saving them thinking they are or will be rare someday. I just don't think that will happen for another hundred years or so since so many have stuck them aside.

Sell all wheats that are not XF or a better date. I have collected over 50k of them over the years and just recently started to unload them. I was paying 2-4 cents each or finding them in rolls from the bank and now 10+ years later and they still only sell for 3-5 cents each.

Where are these available, the best I have seen on ebay was 16 rolls for $50, I would be interested in 5,000 for $50.

I don't think he was saying they sell for $50, but rather a $50 bag contains 5,000 coins. $2-3 dollars/roll seems to be about the going rate for average circulated wheats.

No the bags are not $50. It's more like $250 to $300 with shipping for a random bag of 5,000.

    Hello everyone,

I save all of them as well. Not so much that I want to sell, more so that I like them a lot. Also with the Memorial Reverse now gone I think they will disappear quicker, as someone stated before, they will be hoarded.

    Regards,
    Stan

I just dont have enaough room to store all the wheats I come accross. I can only imagine if some of you guys that have been collecting for a while had done that. I would keep the ones that are in good condition or the key and semi key dates.

I am hoarding any that I find because I think they will be worth alot in the future with the copper hoarders out there

What are the key dates to look for? I like the wheats also and I think I might just keep all that I find.

I would pick up a price guide, or better yet a Redbook if I were you. Then you can decide which ones you want to keep. Honestly, your chances of finding a key date is slim to none. They were cherry picked long ago, back when wheaties still circulated.

I would keep every thing from the 30's and below. The others are way to common to be worth anything for a long time.

I keep all mine because I like the design. I've found about 175 over the past couple years. I don't expect them to be valuable for a long time but it'll be something nice to leave to the grandkids. :)

Personally, I keep them. Found three recently in five dollars of rolls. Got a 1911 and thought, might be a good for a few bucks, come on mint mark! Only to find there was no mint mark. Oh well.
