How rare/valuable is this 1934c $5 SC?

    Hi all,

Since I last posted, I have gotten the Schwartz/Lindquist 9th edition of Small-size Paper Money. I have also talked with Matt over at Lost Dutchman (thanks alot Matt) and have been searching and reading.

One of the bills I have is a 1934C $5 SC with a narrow face #2031 (picture #1). It is not a mule (back = 1921).

Picture #2 is from the Schwartz/Lindquist book where this bill is described. It seems to be rare, although there are no prices for this particular serial # (Q25800308A) and it is asking for serial submissions. Although the range of serial numbers is an abundant 21 million, you can see that many of those numbers are shared with the wide face version (picture #3) I've looked and I can't find any buying or selling or discussion about a 1934C Narrow.

    Any thoughts/insights?

I don't know anything about these. But, I noticed that the catalog refers to "Clark/Snyder" signatures. Your bill is different. I don't know if that makes a difference in your inquiry.

    ikandiggit,

That's just how I cropped the scan. The Clark/Snyder signatures are referring to 1934D which is the next bill described in the book.

    mpcusa,

Could find zero comps at ebay or heritage or bowers/merena. Can find no discussion on any of the boards I've found. Can find no returns on google. There are only 2 reasons why I know this bill even exists, 1) I'm holding it, and, 2) it's in Schwartz/Lindquist. Although Schwartz/Lindquist seem to be shy of info as well.

    Duke Kavanaugh,

Is there any particular insight for your conclusion of $200?

Nice note in a nice grade. The 1934C $5 SC narrows are a tough variety to find—not rare, but scarce. The Q-A block ranks a little easier than the P-A, and the N-A block is the easiest. CUs generally sell in the $200-300 range, while higher-end circs may run a slight premium over a wide note. Your note is a keeper.

Here is my set: The N-A is AU; the P-A, Q-A, and N85...A 637 are CU; and the star is F-VF.

WOW, thanks for the insights, Jamericon.

    3 quick f/u questions.

    1) Do you run smallsizefives website?
    2) Do you think I should send it to a TPG? If so, which one?
    3) I happen to have 3 consecutive notes (the picture above is simply 1 of them). Is there any increased value to that?

1934-C $5 Silver Certificate FR-1653 Extra Fine is only worth
About $11 and Choice Uncirculated is only $15 you would think
It would be worth much more!

Wide vs narrow has to do with a subtle difference in the curl at the bottom right of the face.

Best way to know (wide vs narrow) is to look at the Schwartz/Lindquist page I posted in the OP (#2 picture). It describes the face plate numbers that are narrow face plates (2028, 29, 30, 31).

I don't speak FR #'s, so I don't know about that, however narrow C's are much, much less common than wide C's (I wish that was reversed)

Also, I don't speak grading, however these bills are clearly uncirculated (no folds, creases, tears, stains, etc) and if you tried to fold it, it feels like it would snap like a nice fresh Pringles.

I guess under those circumstances value would have to be based on
What someone was willing to pay, as most price guides give you an
FR# to follow, Not specific plate numbers and signatures, I know the
Bank note reporter gives *Star* and signature designations, But i
Dropped my subscription because they do not cover Mpc :)

Yes, I do run the smallsizefives.com website. Thanks for asking.

I would only get these certified if they are choice or gem CU. There is probably little to gain by certifying an AU or less. Send them to either PCGS or PMG—no preference.

These are Fr. 1653, but the only reference that lists this variety is the S&L guide. The greensheet and BNR guides list prices by Friedberg, which is not specific enough for small-size.

Here are the differences between the wide and narrow notes:

    Narrow-3 lines in the box.

Wide- 4 lines in the box.

SmallSizeFives.com is a great website and a great resource. Back when I knew nothing, I came upon that site and learned a ton.

I have it bookmarked in my Coins/Paper folder right on my toolbar in Firefox.

BTW, you've added most of the stuff on the 34C narrow page recently, haven't you? I don't recall the pictures and additional info from before.

I am glad you find the site informative. I have a lot more to post that will be going up in the next few months, including much more on the 1934C narrows. What is listed for these it what has always been.
