Here are some new pictures of this coin I got over the week-end. I got it at AG-3 and I think it is at least an G-4. If the year was stronger, it may be G-6. What do you all think??
Even with the wear on the date I don't think G06 would be out of the question. Definitely better than AG03. Looks like you got a good deal.
It's a great coin for that grade. Hard to find those in much better condition without spending a years salary
I definately think it as at least a G4 but it may grade a G6 depending on the mood of the grader when you send it in You definately have a nicer coin than a AG anything
Well the one I picked up you would not despute it's 02 grade I barley can read the date only in the light and out of the holder. Mine is so bad that I thought it was a 99 for along time til I took out the holder. But the back is more of a 08 it's the obv that stinks.
Yep - I think I would call it G4 and net it at AG-3. I would try to attribute it, but just not energetic enough to work through the 1798's. Nice coin.
Thank you all for your opinions. BTW: Mark_h what is the best resource for attemping to attribute the coin. I am not familiar with this type.
You did very well. Surfaces are a little rough, but not bad. I'd probably go with G5, but I'm a hard grader for other peoples coins. I'm much easier on my own. The markers for the S-174 (27-X) are present and strong. This is one of the incused bust varieties which show strongly on the reverse, especially in the fraction area. I suggest any of the attribution guides to Early Date Large Cents. I use the older and less expensive Penny Whimsy, but the more expensive and more updated ones have better pictures. Breens has the die progressions, but I can't find or afford his work. The following is a good online tool for comparisons, though it lacks the descriptions of the reference works. I hope it stays up forever, but some day they will want to retrieve the memory: http://www.icollector.com/The-Pre-Long-Beach-Sale_as14916
