I have a 57 franklin half that the seven in the date "hooks" back to the right and almost looks like a 1952. Does anybody know of this mint error?

    WELCOME to cointalk.

Can you post a pic of the coin; that would be most helpful.

Sounds like post mint damage - part of the number 7 has probably been pushed to the side.

The best way is to first upload to www.photobucket.com (it's free), then copy and paste the image link here.

When you post a repply, scroll down below the window you type your post in and you'll see a button Manage Attatchments, click that and a pop-up will open for you to browse your folders for the pciture. When you find the picture click on it the click Open, then the Upload button. The file will be attatched to your post. Click Cubmit Reply button and the pciture will appear in your post.

The image makes it appear to be what is commonly termed a die chip and is more often found on Lincoln cents of the era, but also near the date.

does it add any value to the coin?

nope PMD does not add value or we'd all be beating up our coins :D

Nice photo. Unfortunately this is just a case of the seven being damage from contact. Post-mint.

You really think so Tom ? I've never seen a die chip with a straight edge along one side (look at the bottom edge). That looks more like something that has been added to the coin.

You could be right. I was just going with my first reaction to the image and I most certainly could be incorrect about it.

I thought it just looked as if it had taken a hard enough lick to push some metal around. I see stuff like this with Lincolns all the time.

I would like to see something that would do that to the year and doesn't damage any other part of the coin. Does not look like PMD to me however just as everyone else here I could be wrong.

Take a coin, take a flathead screwdriver and hit a letter or number with it. I'm not sure about halves, but I can tell you as a cent searcher I see this type of damage all the time.

If you look back, I thought that's probably what it was before he even posted the picture. But once he did, that all changed.

Look at the size of the whatever it is. How big would that 7 be if that was added to it ?

It really does happen all the time. Partial or even whole letters and numbers can be pushed to one side or the other.
