Anyone know the answer to this question? Some ppl on ebay sell specific coins such as gold. Some ppl sell all kinds of coins and some only sell ASE's. What is your niche? Care to share? This is posted to stimulate discussion only, if it does that's great if not oh well I'll try again. Anyone?
All niches are or can be profitable if your timing is right. If your timing is wrong all niches can result in you losing your shirt.
It wouldn't be wise to for anyone to tell their niche but I'll give you one. Roll searching. The people who are currently on this board are so brazen about it, they've shot themselves in the foot. So please roll search. I'll stick to my nich if CC Morgans and keep watching profits roll in.
I think everyone has a method to their madness. Whether it is to find the best bargain as a consumer/collector, or as a seller. I try to buy things when they are in a market slump, so naturally I avoided Lincoln cents last year. Peace dollars seemed rather reasonable in price for the last few years, so I decided to try to complete my collection (which I still haven't). Naturally, I mis-judge the market sometimes, and get caught up in impulse buys, but that's all part of the hobby.
Shhh... give me a month for that full set. And as for roll searching, I mainly have the best luck with cents, then nickels, and I get a few rolls of Kennedy's now and then. The main problem I have found is trying to get rolls of cents after all the banks close, I went to 4 different high profile stores and they all shot me down, not even one roll for 50 cents would they let me have. That is until I went to my local 200yd away grocer, they gave me all the rolls in the till. And just for that, I will only spend my money there from now on. Well, there and Costco my place of employment. Oh, and small sporting goods stores, which reminds me I need to restock up on corkies for the fall salmon run. Thats the only time of year coins get put on a back burner.
Have Franklins ever been hot? Seems like their the redhaired stepchild of half dollars. I have a set of them that I'm slowly upgrading to UNC and Proofs.
What about the v nickels, those things seem to sell for much less then I see in the price guides. Have they ever been 'hot'?
Well I really don't want to give away any ancient Chinese secrets like that old commercial says, but I can share a couple things that I've heard of or thought of on my own. Some ppl make money buy buying the old NGC star disignation slabs and coins the only problem I've come across is that some of the coins no longer deserve a star b/c they've toned too much or b/c they were AT'd in the first place. Another area is special ASE's like the 2006-W unc, that's going for big bucks especially in a MS70 grade. Or the 1995, 1986 may be a little money in that area. I know ppl are leary to give out their secrets and that's totally understandable. Heck I don't show my whole hand either but there's plenty of ideas I don't ever plan on trying, besides I have a regular day job, thank God. Some coin collectors diversify and go into selling (so called dollars), there's big money in that area if you know where to get them and know what you're doing. The hardest hurdle I come across is having money to make money, how about you?
There really is only 1 secret. Learn how to grade well enough so that you can walk into a dealer's shop and pick out the under-graded coins - raw or slabbed. Once you can do that, you don't need to worry about knowing anything else
