Whats the oldest coin you've found in your change?

I remember getting buffalos for change when I was a kid.

the oldest thing i got in change would either be a 30s/40s wheat cent or jefferson nickel.

 

I haven't found any recently but when I used to roll seach about 20 years ago I found quite a few. All I can say is happy roll searching.

 

the oldest i've found is a 1908 liberty nickel and the oldest that my fiancée has found is a 1903 indian head cent, which she gave to me since i collect them.

 

Back in the 60's and 70's I used to find an occasional indian head, Mercury dime, buffalo nickels, and silver coins. even a Ben Franklin half dollar.

In the last year 2009, I found two war nickels, a Ben Franklin half, and a $5 silver certificate. The store clerk thought someone gave him a counterfeit bill, I happily traded bills with him.

 

The oldest coin that I have personally found at work was a 1939 Jefferson nickel. A co worker of mine has found a 1912 wheat, dateless buffalo and a 1914 merc. I try and search through as many of our 18 cash registers a day, but of all the coins in the tills, its the nickels that pay off the most often with older dates, and a few wartime nickels so far I've found 4 of them, one being a 43 D.

Most finds I get are regular wheatbacks and no date Buffalo nickels. I have gotten a few early date jefferson nickels. Most would probably drop their draw but I usually put them back in circulation Only silvers or a real nice Buffalo do I keep.

 

It's a two-way tie between a 1947 quarter and a '47 wheat for me.

I vaguely recall getting some George VI shillings and florins in my change from buying sweets when I was a kid. They circulated as 5 and 10 pence pieces until they were demonetised in 1990 and 1992. Nowadays, the earliest coins I get in my change only date back to the year of decimalisation in 1971.....

 

I was going through some Canadian rolls and found a 1927, 1935 nickle also a 1934 Canadian cent. Would like to find some early 1909 or so US cents though.

 

Found an 1893 and a 1905 Liberty V-nickel 2 weeks ago! Never found anything that old before and was completely random and really really lucky lol

 

Roughly the same here in Germany. Before the euro changeover, it was pretty common to find 50-year-old coins in circulation. Now the oldest piece that I may come across would be 11 years old.

1857 flying eagle penny but then I lost it :headbang:

But right now my oldest coin is a 1905 indian head cent (worth one dollar)
second oldest: 1928 walking liberty quarter ( worth about 3-4 dollars)
1928 wheat cent (not sure of value)
Third oldest: 1943 steel penny with a missing 4 error ( about .50 to a $1)

 

Very nice!!!! I love Flying Eagles. They're my favorite cent design ever.
My oldests are:
Oldest penny is a 1910,
Oldest nickel is a 1939 although I have found three war nickels.
Oldest dime is a 1936 merc.
Oldest quarter is a no-date standing liberty (which is missing at the moment).
Oldest half is a 1964.
Oldest dollar: probably a 1971 Ike. Not too many dollar in circulation around here.

 

There are disadvantages to living in a country within living memory of a major currency reform...
My mum remembers regularly using Queen Victoria pennies at the shops back in the 1960s. She even came across a battered old 1827 George IV half-penny circulating as a penny (before 1860, the half-penny was about the same size as pre-decimal bronze full penny as used up until 1971, hence the confusion)....

 

I purchased a bag of Half dollars at the bank. It included a very worn about 1740 UK farthing.

Outside of that, 1911 Lincoln head penny.
