Searched $10 worth of pennies. It yielded 7 wheat cents. Not sure if that is high, low, or about right.
I am averaging about two wheaties out of every five hundred cents. Also about 25 percent copper, and usually a canadian or two.
My average is 2-4 for 20$ in rolled cents, the oldest pulled from a roll a 1918. I would say your doing well. Then again I did once get a few rolls full of AU 56-58's, sure was a score that day. Also, my rolls come from other bank patrons.
Every once in a while I will get roll of 100% old stuff (wheat pennies). It's getting rarer and rarer. Try nickels. Sure it costs 5 times as much for the same number of coins but you can find war nickels. I have even found war nickels in circulation from time to time.
Nothing to write home about. I told a dealer buddy of mine and he said "you know you can just buy rolls of wheats, their over there." Seen them usually go for $2.50 to $3.00 what a markup.
Yep, I put away some jars of it, once I get the cherrry pickers guide and some time I will sort thru them for varieties and also a way to indulge in the hobby without much expense.
That is what I did for part of the morning: sort through pocket change and bank rolls of pennies. The pocket change seems to yield the best. About 14 (1963-1982) out of 60.(this sort is more like a 2nd sort, as I keep my eyes on the cents when ever using them as cash).
